How Do Chipper Shredders Work?

January 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 189

Have you ever wondered how a chipper shredder is able to turn your garden waste into tiny little wood chips and mulch? The machine may look a little complicated, but they all work in a very similar way, even the big commercial sized ones.

Firstly, something has to power the machine. This is achieved through either an electric or petrol-powered motor. Electric is preferable for some people as these chipper shredder motors are considered to be quieter and more economical. However, equipment installed with a petrol motor are preferable to others as they generally have more power and more maneuverability than their electric counterparts. A v-and-pulley system or a gearbox is then used to transfer power between the motor and the rest of the machine. The motor is an essential part of the mechanics behind a working chipper shredder - it is what makes the sharp blades inside the machine turn around and cut up the garden waste.

Then there are the blades, or knives, themselves. Without the blades, the chipper shredder would not be able to grind up any garden waste. This is, however, also dependent on the type of blades your machine is equipped with. Some models use razor type sharp blades that have been attached onto three or four different rotating shafts. These can shave down the branches into smaller pieces very quickly, and the pieces get smaller and smaller as they passes through each blade. Then there are the chipper shredders that use inter-meshing blades. These types are able to pull the branches and other garden waste into the cutting mechanism with little effort on your part. This is generally known as a 'self-fed' machine. A screen is located beneath the blade that ensures the wood chips are of a similar size (if they are too big they will not fall through).

The resulting wood chips are then deposited down the exit of the chipper shredder, usually into a bag that is placed at the bottom. What once began as garden waste is now a useful tool. The wood chips can be used on flowerbeds and gardens for a more attractive base than soil. They can also be left to 'compost' for a while before being used on the garden as mulch. Before using your chipper shredder to do this, however, you should check that the type of branches and garden waste you intend to put through it will be suitable for your garden and not contain chemicals that might damage your plants.
