What's More Important Perfection or Consistency?

May 31, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 130

Over the years, I've been caught in a constant struggle between perfection and consistency. Now then, I suppose in a perfect world, which I doubt we will have in my lifetime, it would be best to have consistent perfection. However, we know that practice makes perfect, and it takes years of practice to get your process perfect. It hardly matters what you are doing, whether you are in business, sports, art, or running some large organization. Even in your own life, I'm sure you realize that perfection is difficult, and often fleeting. Okay so, let's talk about this for second shall we?

When I was young, I played soccer for seven years. We had some players who on occasion made absolutely perfect shots, or perfect passes. However, when they didn't, it was often a disaster, they may as well have been passing the ball to the other team setting them up for a run at the goal. Are you beginning to see my point here? Is my contention that I would rather have someone that is consistent, reliable, and I can count on them, because they are predictable, rather than having someone who hits a home run 1 minute and the next inning with two-outs and the bases-loaded strikes out. Can you see what I'm driving at?

Now then, I'd like to use another example in my own life, because I've observed myself in my writing endeavors. Perhaps you didn't know this, but I have written quite a bit online. I would say that my articles are not perfect, nor do I consider myself a great writer, and my spelling and grammar has a little bit left to be desired. If you look hard enough, you will find a mistake probably in every single article, whether it be a spelling error, sentence structure, capitalization, or perhaps grammar. Nevertheless, as I said I'm quite consistent, you know what to expect.

One could say that even though I've fought myself to try to make my articles perfect, I eventually realized that the extra effort to get there wasn't doing justice for my need to get information out to the world. If I went over each article 10 times, I still could not guarantee they would be perfect, but they would be nearly perfect. However, if I go over each article twice when editing, I believe they are close enough to get my point across, without offending you as the reader, or destroy my credibility in the process.

Therefore, I conclude that consistency is more important than perfection, and if you wait until everything is perfect, you may never do anything of any value during your lifetime. Perhaps perfection is overrated, and that's my thinking here. If you disagree, I'd love for you to shoot me an e-mail, and explaine to me your side of the argument, and let's compare notes.
