Three Things to Consider When Choosing a Freelance Writer

April 10, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 97

You've decided that you need content for your site, but what do you do now? There are literally thousands of writers on the web all saying the same thing, "Pick me! I"m the best! I can give you really great content for a cheap price and a turn-around time of 2 hours!" Sounds promising, a really great deal even, but don't fall for it.

I'm a writer who has worked my way up from the bottom of the heap to a professional writer and I know every trick in the book. I'm going to share with you three easy ways to determine whether a writer is legitimate or a hustler.

1. A Professional Writer has Presence and Reputation:

A professional writer will have some sort of presence outside of an online bidding site. Look for a blog, a website or guest feature pieces. Do not accept examples sent to you directly, like a word document. They must have some "concreteness" on a webpage. If there is no presence outside of a bidding site then scrutinize their reputation. If they have negative feedback, weigh that against their positive feedback.

Why is this important? A lot of writers hustle clients by submitting writing samples that are not their own. The sample you will see is excellent and then the actual content they write for you reads like it was written by a third grader.

2. A Professional Writer Speaks English:

If you need content that is written in English, you need a writer who speaks English as their first language and comes from an English speaking country. I do not mean to say that all writers from non-English speaking countries cannot write great articles in English, but the majority of them cannot. English is one of the hardest languages to learn and you will end up rewriting the entire article and wasting your money if you do not heed this advice.

3. Writing Quality is Reflected in Price:

I know that you do not want to hear this, but a writer who only charges $0.50 per 100 words is not a professional writer. They want you to hire them so they can hustle you. Now you may ask, "Isn't better for me to get as much content as I can at a lower price?" After all why spend $100 on two articles when you could get 100 articles for the same amount and have more content on my site? I'm going to be brutally honest with you; you are better off with 2 amazing articles rather than 100 crappy ones. You may think that more content equals more Google recognition, but you are wrong. Google will actually ban you from search results if you have bad content.

I'll let you in on a secret; you think you are getting a great deal when you hire cheap writers, but you are not. Writers who work for so little can do so because they use article generators or stolen content. Just think about this for a minute. A good article takes anywhere between 30 minutes to over an hour to write. Would you work for $1.50 an hour? No you wouldn't and you would resort to using article generators or stealing content to supplement that deficit.

Content is a worthwhile investment, so don't opt for a sub-standard writer. With these three simple steps you stand a better chance of landing a writer with some talent and a desire to make you money.
