Why Bother Wearing The Right Gear?

February 20, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 174

Why do tree cutters need fall protective gear? Everyone who works at ten, twenty, thirty or more feet off the ground deserves this protection. After all, any worker who must handle dangerous equipment at a great height is only as safe as gravity and luck will allow. Workers need basic arborist gear such as safety harnesses, safety lanyards and, of course, a quality climbing helmet.

Professionals want to prevent accidents. They know the dangers of being suspended on a ladder, in a lift or on a tree limb without proper equipment. They consider safety harnesses, safety lanyards, pulleys and cabling to be tools of the trade.

That's why contractors, sub-contractors, professional landscapers and self-employed arborists make sure that everyone on the worksite has the necessary gear. Purchasing and maintaining a supply of the right arborist gear is a combination of caring, common sense and good business practice.

Every individual who is involved with cutting or pruning trees must have fall protection gear. Without it, individuals may fall from great heights, resulting in death or injury. Common injuries include concussions, broken arms, broken legs, broken backs and other medical problems. Not only are these injuries life-threatening, but they are also life-changing. Injuries cause individual loss of work and a general business loss of productivity. Lengthy recoveries result in a loss of lifestyle as income is lost and medical bills pile up.

Employer-provided fall protection gear is a matter of common decency, and it is also good business practice. If employees do not have adequate arborist gear, employers leave themselves open to the high cost of accident-related medical bills and lawsuits. They may also face government fines, higher business liability insurance premiums and/or higher employee health insurance premiums.

Climbing helmets are an essential tool when dealing with branches that often weigh hundreds of pounds. When limbs fall, those in the tree and on the ground are in danger. Helmets add an extra measure of safety. Helmets minimize distractions from dangling branches, dropping twigs and so forth. Worker reaction to these distractions can cause a dangerous chainsaw mistake, a tragic fall or both.

Safety vests should be worn by everyone in the crew. These ensure that crane or lift operators can see workers in the trees. For those working by roadways, safety vests make workers more visible to passing drivers.

Using safety gear to protect the public is both common sense and good business sense. Safety cones should mark off a buffer zone around a tree-pruning area. Cones and other safety signs and markers should be used to keep vehicles and pedestrians away from dropping limbs or falling trees.

Fall protection gear is essential for scientific and/or sports-minded individuals who climb tall trees. They too should utilize climbing helmets. Safety harnesses, safety lanyards, pulleys and cabling also make the activity more fun as they can climb higher much more safely.
