Straightforward Safety Tips for Businesses

April 23, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 172

Are you concerned about health and safety in your work place? Whatever your role in the company you have every right to get involved in ensuring standards are adhered to. You shouldn't be afraid of turning to your line manager to express your worries and make some suggestions to improve the situation. And if you are in a managerial position already, get your colleagues in on the game. If everyone were so considerate and paid attention to details, accidents would be much less likely to occur. So how do you go about bringing up the health and safety topic?

Communication Is Key

Every company has to go through some form of safety review. If you've noticed something might be causing a potential hazard make sure the person in charge of performing this review is aware of the issue immediately. This way it can be dealt with in a timely manner.

Also, be sure to alert your colleagues by either speaking to them directly if the team is not a big one or, putting up a sign or sending out an email if the team is too large to do the rounds.

These small gestures could be enough to stop accidents from happening.

If you are in a position that requires you to organise teambuilding activities, arrange a health and safety awareness activity, such as a first aid training day. This would not only benefit the company but also be useful for the staff individually. If it's not in your competence to organise something, make sure you suggest the idea to whoever is in charge.

Alternatively you could set up a health and safety-related competition, brainstorm or just host a creative workshop. Staff could get involved in coming up with innovative ideas for alerting each other and company visitors of hazards. These could take the form of videos, posters and staff newsletter features. If you were to make a video, you could choose your own members of staff or colleagues to be the actors. This is a fun activity for getting people involved in the whole company's work not just their own role.

Quality Control

These days price often dictates people's decisions to purchase a specific product. Unfortunately, cheap objects and equipment are far more likely to cause harm to those using it. Be sure to choose quality over price. Chances are you'll be a winner at the end of the day as quality usually equals better value for money because you have to buy fewer replacements.

Similarly, look out for quality when renting any temporary equipment. Don't base your decisions on impulse. Be sure to do some market research before choosing a rental company. This is particularly important when looking at electrical equipment such as power generator, chiller or load bank rental. Faulty equipment from a suspicious company offering unbelievably cheap services could lead to more harm than good. Choose a respectable rental agent who has experience in your particular industry.
