Resolutions for a Law Enforcement Bullet Proof Vest for Police Officers

April 11, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 155

IACP recognizes the importance of a law enforcement bullet proof vest in providing our police officers utter protection from possible threat. Apparently their line of work entails danger which is why it is vital that they are well protected at all times. Their work is susceptible to risky scenarios same with the militaries and armies as opposed to other profession.

The resolution entitled "Use of Soft Body Armor by Law Enforcement Personnel" was adopted or taken from the Division of the State Associations of Chief of Police. This was embraced way back in 1999 and from then on became IACP policy.

The resolution was made in order to put emphasis on the safety of our police officers. It aims to educate everyone particularly law enforcement officials about their obligations and responsibilities in protecting themselves against harm or getting into a life-and-death situations.

It also reiterates about the "wear policy" on a bullet proof vest especially to investigative personnel and officers on-duty. It is not just focused only on the wear policy but also on its proper fitting. Wearing is not adequate enough, it should be the perfect fit for each person so as to ensure comfort, mobility and ease.

Another important aspect in the resolution is that periodic inspection should be conducted to the body armors issued to each police officer's and replacing the defective ones when needed. This inspection is conducted to ascertain that all our officials are wearing quality and functional ballistic vests.

However, despite the painstaking effort of IACP to meet the standards of safety and provide impeccable protection to the wearer, still a lot of work is needed to make the resolution effective.

Even with great effort and availability of body armors, still the result shows only 15-20 percent of the officers issued with the ballistic vest wears them. It is said that the impediment in increasing the wear rates of resistant vest is due to poor police leadership. This is because a lot of our police agencies still do not have the mandate about the "wear policy." And for those who have adopted the mandatory of wearing vest, they also lack the process of inspection to ensure compliance.

Sad to say, although some agencies may have implemented the policy, nonetheless failure to consistently enforce the policy is neglected. Most likely the vests are found either thrust at the back of the patrol car or hanging somewhere in the station house or lockers, or even just kept in the bedroom cabinet, neglected and forgotten.

Therefore, implementing the resolution is not sufficient. It should be strictly followed-up, re-checked and strictly mandated. Putting a penalty for negligence could help also in achieving IACP goals.

For me, if life is valuable, mandates or resolutions are just secondary convincing elements to let you wear one. Your main reason of donning a bullet proof vest is because you value your life.
