Working in a kitchen environment can incur many dangers. To help prevent these dangers, procedures, rules and guidelines should be put into place to help protect those who work in an environment where food is prepared. Every employee who works in a kitchen should adhere to the employer's safety policy. It is the responsibility of the employees and the employers to make sure procedures are met and that the kitchen environment is kept as safe as possible. If rules and guidelines are not carried out, accidents may occur which may result in employees becoming injured or wounded. Almost every part of working in a kitchen has some sort of hazard attached to it. Making sure that each person is trained on how to use objects and equipment is important when working in a kitchen environment.

Knives and other sharp utensils should be used with care in the way they were intended. Hot ovens and cooking appliances can cause burns if not used in the correct way. Spillages should always be cleaned up as soon as possible so no one slips or skids. Each employee should wear the correct uniform. Chef whites and a chef hat is a vital part of one's uniform when working in a kitchen, they should be worn whenever an employee is in the kitchen so as to adhere to the work place rules. Prepare food using the correct equipment and utensils so as not to contaminate food. Kitchens should be thoroughly cleaned at the end of the working day using the right cleaning products.

Food should be stored in the correct way. Keep food types separate and do not mix food types with each other as they may become contaminated. Food poisoning is a major issue when working in a kitchen. Preparing food for customers requires employees to take responsibility of making sure that food is stored and cooked in the correct way. Failure to do so may result in undercooked food or contamination of food which may result in food poisoning.

A kitchen environment is potentially one of the most dangerous environments to work in. Employees must take extra care to follow instructions, rules, guidelines and procedures. Doing so will keep everyone safe while in the work place. Those who own businesses where food is prepared must make sure that each employee adheres to all food safety guidelines. Safety should be the number one priority when working in this kind of environment.
