Construction Shelters Provide Worker Safety In Extreme Temperatures

April 24, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 304

Delays caused by increment weather can be quite costly for those in the construction industry. In order to prevent weather from having a negative effect on productivity, construction shelters are an ideal solution.

Working outdoors in extreme heat or cold can take a lot out of a person, and in some cases may even prove to be fatal. Therefore, it is important to ensure your workers are provided with adequate shelter when weather conditions are most unfavorable.

Construction workers are exposed to the environment for forty to sixty hours per week on average. Therefore, these workers are vulnerable to stress and illness due to extreme temperatures. Prolonged exposure to extreme heat or cold may lead to a number of serious health conditions, even death. It is your responsibility as an employer to learn how to recognize and prevent the dangers of working in extreme weather conditions.

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Act, or OSHA, employers are required to comply with health and hazard-specific safety standards. In accordance with Section 5(a) (1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act, which is often referred to as the General Duty Clause, an employer must provide a hazard-free workspace for his or her employees. The clause has been used in the past to cite employers who allowed their workers to be exposed to excessively hot or cold work environments that could cause potential harm to those employees.

Heat stress can occur when workers are exposed to radiant heat sources, high air temperatures and high humidity. Outdoor projects in hot weather, especially if workers are dressed in semi-permeable or impermeable apparel, may lead to heat stress. Three primary illnesses related to working in extreme heat include heat exhaustion, heat cramp and heat stroke.

Injuries can also occur when working in extremely cold environments, such as a construction site during the coldest winter months. Frostbite and hypothermia are only two of the most common cold-related injuries that may occur from working outdoors in such extreme temperatures. In addition, working in extreme cold can also aggravate an employee's pre-existing health conditions, such as asthma, Raynaud's disease and diabetes. There is also the risk of falls, trips and slips when snow and ice are allowed to build up around the work site.

Tension fabric structures make the best construction shelters to protect your workers from extreme weather conditions all year long. These shelters can be set up as temporary or semi-permanent structures.
