Behavior Based Safety: How To Write a Behavior Based Safety Program That Will Pass ISNetworld Review

June 07, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 426

Writing a behavior based safety program is not difficult. There are 5 main items that you need to make sure that you include. Your behavior based safety program may have more than these 5 items but at a minimum, if you want it to pass ISNetworld's review team, these items need to be included.

1. Your safety program must specifically state that supervisors and/or management is observing the employees work behavior and these observations are being recorded on a form.

2. Your program should address that the individuals that are doing the observing must be trained on the observation process and on how to complete the observation form. This training should also include what the objectives of the program are and what metrics are being reviewed. Did your company have a problem with ankle injuries last year? If so, one of the metrics could be housekeeping, keeping the workplace free of clutter. If your objective is to eliminate ankle injuries then this needs to be stated in your behavior based safety program. The training should also include explanations on what the behaviors mean and how to mentor or coach the employees. Also it is important to include in your behavior based safety program that the employees will be informed that they could be observed at any time.

3. The behavior based safety program should address that after an observation is complete the observer should speak to the employee or observed. The observer should use the "sandwich" technique. Start with complementing the observed on what they did right. This reinforces safe work practices. Then discuss unsafe work practices and make sure to make this a dialogue and not a lecture. End the conversation on a positive note by complementing other safe work practices observed and mention that there will be no consequences for any observed unsafe behavior during this training process.

4.The behavior based program should address how the company intends to use the data from the observations and how the company intends to perform a trend analysis. Your company should want to know if safe working behavior is increasing or decreasing. If unsafe work practices are on the rise then the odds of an accident or incident is also on the rise.

5. Last, your behavior based safety program should address what you intend to do once you have completed the trend analysis. Once you prioritize the unsafe work practices, management needs to develop a plan to reduce or eliminate these unsafe work practices. The behavior based safety program needs to address who will be in charge of implementing this plan and when this plan will be completed.

Your behavior based safety program may contain many more elements. It should contain as many elements that you feel are necessary to create a safe work environment but at a minimum your behavior based safety program must contain the 5 elements listed above if you wish for it to pass the ISNetworld review team.
