Maintaining High Emotional Intelligence for Employees

April 15, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 108

These organisations have invested resources in acquiring the finest of profitable assets - the employees. They also have a plan in place that supports the maintenance of those assets.

One way to maintain high EI for employees is to train Human Resource (HR) Managers and other appropriate staff in Cognitive Behavioural Coaching (CBC). Cognitive Behavioural Coaching is the practice of thinking about beliefs and considering how they relate to and influence actions. Cognitive Behavioural Coaching promotes Emotional Intelligence because it aides the deep self-awareness required to achieve it.

Employees with a high EI are self-monitors who are able to recognize, understand, accept and control emotions. Therefore, they are able to analyse and adjust actions in dealings with colleagues which in turn creates positive work environments. Workers with high levels of EI are producers who complete projects with great success because of their ability to approach tasks from a complete point of view - mental, emotional and physical. Thus it is in the best interest of any business that employs such persons to take the necessary steps to maintain their EI as well as work skills.

Human Resource Managers can use CBC to help employees maintain an accurate self-awareness which is crucial for Emotional Intelligence. Cognitive Behavioural Coaching gives employees a structured opportunity for self-examination. It is effective in helping workers to explore and correct their attitudes about work, colleagues and even personal issues that could possibly affect productivity. The benefits of an emotionally healthy employee to a company goes beyond reducing stress at the office, it also develops self-confident individuals who teach what they have learned to others. Just as having a bad apple will spoil the bunch, having emotionally intelligent employees will spread success throughout an organisation.

Everyone has a work and a professional life, and one of the many benefits of CBC is that when a person learns to identify and examine their thoughts at work, they will also use this skill at home. It is not uncommon that a person is competent at work because that is where they invest most of who they are and to the detriment of personal relationships. The magic of practicing Cognitive Behavioural Coaching in conjunction with Emotional Intelligence is that the entire person is being built.

The nature of these processes is to support the health of the person. A deep self-awareness inspires personal behavior analysis, and CBC leads to increased emotional maturity. To maintain a sufficient level of emotional health in your employees, regularly scheduled conferences with a trained CBC coach will keep everyone in the organisation on track for success. A company that proactively encourages the mental health of its employees will have loyal employees who are committed to the success of the business because the business is committed to them.
