Wood Art, Building a Wooden Sign

When building a wooden sign to display your business name and or street address. You want to create a plan to find the wood to used with your sign. When setting up the a plan I may want to use two different types of wood to display a natural contrast between the raised letters on a lighter wooden plaque. If I use the same wood for the raised letters on the plaque the look is not as effective as the raised letters would blend in with the background color of the wooden base.

When choosing the type of wood I want to use for the sign, I need to remember that the sign needs to withstand the weather. I like the idea of having two separate types of wood. As this will create a contrast between the plaque, the raised letters with the design.

Once you have determined the wood that you are going to use to build your wooden sign, the next thing to do would be to lay out the letters on a piece of paper and to create the design that you will use as a stencil to transfer the lettering and design to the wood.

Using graph paper to set up the letters and design I am able to create a more uniform look to the letters and to create an artistic design to add to the beauty of the sign. Once I have established the size of the letters and have created an effective stencil this will make it easier to draw the letters and numbers on the wooden board which I will use as raised letters and design on a wooden plaque.

When transferring the design and letters to the wooden board, you want to use masking tape instead of a clear sticky tape as the adhesive may damage the wood as well as the paper you are using for a stencil to build the raised letters and design.

While using a soft lead pencil, I am able to trace the stencils to transfer the design and letters to the wooden surface and then using a drill I am able to cut out the letters and design which I will use to create the raised letters and design to add to the surface of the wooden plaque. When creating your design it is best to use shapes that are not too ridged. Having a simple design will make it easier to cut out the pieces of the plaque and lower the risk of making a mistake with a more complex design.

Using a simple design makes it possible to have an attractive sign that is visible from a distance. It is more important to have a simple sign instead of a more complex harder to read sign where the details can only be seen when viewing up close. The simple sign is the more effective when viewed up close or from a distance.
