February 27, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 155

Menorrhagia is very common medical condition that affects one in five women. It is defined as the presence of abnormally heavy or long-lasting menstrual periods. Most women suffering from menorrhagia don't even realize that their heavy periods are not normal. Many of these women do not realize that heavy bleeding for four or five days or having to change their pad while menstruating every hour is something they do not have to live with. Menorrhagia is a recognized medical condition, and contrary to common belief, there are treatment options available other than hormones or hysterectomy.

Menorrhagia can in fact be treated safely, successfully and simply. The specific treatment for heavy bleeding is based on numerous factors. You and your doctor can decide the most appropriate treatment type by assessing your overall general health, the cause and severity of Menorrhagia, if you plan on having children in the future, how you react to specific medications and procedures, your opinion, and of course your personal preference.

There are multiple treatment options available for women suffering from Menorrhagia. Some of these are more effective than others and include hormone therapy, hormone releasing (IUD), dilation and curettage (D&C), endometrial ablation and hysterectomy.

Hormone therapy may be an option for some women, but have been shown to be minimally effective for most women. Clinical studies have shown high levels of hormone therapy treatments most often lead to a hysterectomy.

D&C is another option that has shown to be very effective in treating heavy bleeding. However, the down side is that it only works for a short period of time, and usually needs to be repeated.

Endometrial ablation is a one time, minimally invasive procedure that ends heavy menstrual bleeding safely with no side effects. The procedure usually takes about 15 minutes to perform in an out patient setting. Most women return to work the next day and only feel temporary cramping and vaginal discharge sometimes lasting up to a few weeks. Endometrial ablation is a great option for women who are done child bearing.

Hysterectomy is a surgical procedure that requires significant recovery time and may have more potential for complications as with any surgery. This procedure is also only an option for women done with child bearing.

As you can see there are different treatment options for treating Menorrhagia. It is advisable to discuss your options with a physician; you can then start to determine the best treatment option that is most suited to you.
