How Do You Know You Have a Vaginal Yeast Infection?

June 06, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 160

A vaginal yeast infection occurs when the genital area becomes irritated. Yeast is a fungus and when there is an over abundant growth of Candida albicans, another name for the yeast, you can end up with a yeast infection.

Although it's rarer, men can also come down with a yeast problem in their genital area. The difference between the two is that women usually suffer with more debilitating symptoms than men. It's even possible for a man to be unaware he has a problem because his symptoms are so mild. In cases such as this, males can unintentionally pass the problem to their female sexual partners

Women will usually notice a burning or itching in their genital area and with more advanced infections, they will also experience a vaginal discharge that somewhat resembles cottage cheese.

Other typical signs of an infection include pain with urination, pain during sex, a rash on the vagina, and general soreness and discomfort in the area.

There are also a number of more obscure symptoms that are experienced rarely amongst women but are worth mentioning. They include gas, bloating, heart burn, sinus issues, skin rashes, fatigue, headaches and dizziness.

It's a fact that 75% of all women will experience at least one incident in their lifetime with about half of all women will experience multiple occurrences of vaginal yeast infections.

Once you've experienced one yeast infection it is likely you'll have similar symptoms with any future flare-ups. Although, it's not something that you can count on. At least you'll be more familiar with this medical condition by going through it once.

The bottom line is you should see your doctor when you are suspicious that you have a yeast infection. The typical symptoms are similar to sexually transmitted diseases and the more rare symptoms can also be a sign of other illnesses and medical conditions so self-diagnosis can be a challenge in some cases.

If you experience repeated incidents of an infection, your doctor may discuss some over the counter treatments and also guide you on steps you can take to lessen the chances you'll continue to experience a large number of flare-ups. Yeast infections can be cured with anti-fungal creams, tablets, or ointments as well as suppositories that are inserted into the vagina.

So, even when you experience the run of the mill symptoms of an infection, it is best to see your doctor at least for the initial case. The symptoms are applicable to other health conditions and needs to be narrowed down to the exact problem.
