When Disaster Strikes, Go to Plan B Dressing

February 29, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 115

You know the feeling! You have just got dressed ready to go out to that business event and suddenly you notice something is wrong. Now you have to change in a hurry. So much for deciding the night before what you were going to wear today!

Yes, I have had my share of last-minute disasters - rough heels caught in skirt hems, toothpaste stains on a clean jumper etc. Disasters usually happen when you are rushing and not concentrating totally on what you are doing. Apart from slowing down, what can you do?

Here are three tips to help you laugh at minor disasters and immediately go to Plan B. It is your disaster preparation behind the scenes that makes all the difference.

Stick to Your Very Best Colours Base your wardrobe around a few colours that absolutely make you look fabulous. If you have a colour swatch, make sure that you have tops, jackets, dresses and accessories in the three colours that contrast with your skin tone, your main eye colour and your dominant hair colour. If your eye colour or your hair colour is the stand-out feature on your face, add the shade that heightens (ie brightens or deepens) that particular colour. These three or four colours are the colours that always attract compliments from other people. Then choose a couple of extra colours from your colour swatch that you like and that go with your three or four main face colours. These colours will be your signature colours that everyone compliments you on. So, for example, you may end up with base colours of red, purple, turquoise, aqua and grape.

Add a few tops, shirts, dresses or jackets in neutral colours that suit you and appeal to you. These may be black, white, brown, cream, beige or any pattern including these colours. Buy skirts or pants in your preferred dark or light neutral colours.

This makes it very easy to swap clothes or accessories when disaster strikes. A neutral base and a coloured top is always a good basic dressing tip for business and professional women over 40.

Maintenance Is Important When you notice an item that needs repairing, put it aside immediately to be fixed. Do the basic repairs as soon as possible or set a regular time aside each week to either fix them or take them somewhere to be fixed. Remove things on clothes that annoy you. If you never wear your tops tucked into your skirt these days, unpick the belt loops to create a smoother line on your skirt. If there is a hook and eye on the back of your skirt zip and it is hard to do up or digs into you, unpick it and take it off. Make sure everything in your wardrobe is comfortable to wear as uncomfortable clothes are often bypassed.

This way when disaster strikes, you get to choose an alternative from your entire wardrobe and not from a small part of your wardrobe.

Book the Next Appointment Before You Leave Dressing is more than just your clothes. Booking your next appointment with the hairdresser, massage therapist or beauty salon before you leave ensures that you always look your best from head to toe. Unruly hair, chipped nails, tense shoulders and hairy legs can destroy the impression made by wearing nice clothes. When you schedule your appointments to look after yourself and allow time to be prepared for any event, you ensure your favourite person is always available. As a business or professional women over 40, there are lots of background people in your life who contribute to you walking out your door looking good and feeling calm and confident.

Disasters happen when we least expect them. Having a Plan B backup gives you plenty of dressing choices so that you never again suffer from last-minute panic or the fear of having to cancel and stay at home.
