The Economic Significance of Whale Conservation

May 07, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 113

Conservation of all wildlife has become a universal priority. This is due primarily to the exploitation by the human race in serving their own diverse interests; from killing for self-indulgent trophies, to the proven and ignorant misconception of enhanced healing or sexual prowess. In some instances however, if the wildlife species is a source for needed food it is understandable. Nevertheless, it should only be on condition that disciplined controls are enforced and care is taken to maintain, or even increase the stocks of affected wildlife. This has influences not only on the well-being of a population, but on the economic growth of various communities and high volume business, for example whale watching trips.

Whale watching has become a valued source of income for many people in various locations around the world. It is an indication of how an economy could be affected by regulated wildlife conservation. This is experienced by game farms, and associated businesses, for example tour operators. It is also reflected when related to whales and those associated with whale watching in its various forms.

Since the emergence of industrial whaling in the seventeenth century, over a million whales have been killed worldwide. Whales have an extremely slow rate of reproduction, with adult females of the species, giving birth to a single calf, every few years. The increasing threats to the species, has created difficulties in determining whether whale populations are increasing, remaining stable or declining.

Various groups associated with, and concerned about whale conservation, do not just include environmentalists. Others with vested interests are for example, the operators of whale watching cruises who depend on the species for their livelihood. The extent of what may only be described as whale plundering, on the part of some self-indulgent nations, has had a severe impact on most of the whale populations. It has had a significant influence on their ecological position within the marine environment.

They are often viewed as eco-system health indicators and have an influencing part in the oceans nutrient cycling process. This particular aspect has a domino effect on the world economy, including leisure activities related to the many sea-going pursuits. The various influences contributed by this type of research, is aided by whale watching and observation of breeding and behavioural patterns.

It has to date, not been determined, the impact climate changes and various environmental influences will have on the whale populations of the world. Various reports show that because of their large size and long life spans of more than eighty years, they could serve as a carbon storage source for the oceans. This could be an indication that they may be affected by climate changes, but could also influence the nature of those changes.
