Fox Fur Colors: A Short Historical Reference

April 11, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 133

The time, effort and labour that is involved into creating so many colour phases of fox is not adequately understood by the consumer. As with developing a fine taste for the various colours and types of fine wines and jewelry, buyers can become discerning in their buying habits when choosing fox. The colour variety available is uniquely amazing.

In the wild, the typical red fox can be found in a wide range of hues. Foxes whose natural habitat is the mountains are often light coloured while dark reddish foxes can be found in forested areas. A recessive gene in the DNA of the red fox is responsible for the silver coloured foxes.. Blue fox is a blue-gray colour type of the Arctic fox, an animal that is white during the winter and becomes dark gray during the summer. From the combination of these wild foxes, ranchers have cross bred foxes into an amazing spectrum of colours, that were once upon a time but probably hidden in the animal's genetic code.

Canadian farmers were the first ones to experiment with blue fox cross-breeding. At the end of the 19th century, Canadian traders were performing experiments with red and cross foxes to develop mutation silver-black foxes. At the same time, in Alaska, farmers were experimenting with Arctic foxes.

The first "Platina" silver foxes appeared in Norway in 1930 and farmers high prices at the auction house, out pricing wild silver fox by multiple times.

American breeders followed up and created the bluish tinted fox, which was registered as "Platinum" in the U.S.A and became the major competitor of the norwegian "Platina".

Albino foxes are a mutation of the red fox. The complete lack of a hormone called melatonin is responsible for their pure white colour.

A mutant "arctic marble" was born in a fox farm in Norway just after the end of the second world war. When red or silver foxes gene are cross bred with a marble fox, the mix is calico patterns in red, brown, black and gray.

In 1952, after fifteen years of breeding a farm in Wisconsin produced a burgundy gold fox which called "Golden Glory".

An exciting colour phase called "fire type" made its appearance in 1983. It consisted of a series of colors from a light red or gold to cream or almost white. The gene responsible for the fire types only affects Red melanin. This fire type gene causes the melanin to be bleached to pale red or yellow, cream or almost white, resulting in an amazing colour combination.
