Five Top Reasons of What Causes Obesity: Are These Affecting Your Weight Loss?

February 25, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 129

Medical practitioners tell us that the answer to what causes obesity is not real straightforward. There is not one single cause that can be identified. From a physical standpoint, obesity is caused by taking in more calories than one expends; if this happens on a consistent basis, then the number on the scale goes up, sometimes very quickly. If the difference between calorie intake and the number of calories used is very large, then obesity becomes extreme.

Doctors tell us that what causes obesity is our daily habits. We must change our habits in order to lose weight. Unfortunately, many of us struggle mightily with weight loss, often blaming ourselves for our seeming inability to win the battle of the bulge. Finding the underlying cause of your obesity is one of the keys to success with lasting weight loss and healthy lifestyle change. Here are five of the most common.

Past Emotional Trauma Distressing events, often those which took place during childhood, set the stage for obesity. Victims of physical and sexual abuse, as well as victims of neglect or emotional abuse often use food as a means to comfort themselves. This is called emotional eating, and while many people engage in emotional eating sessions and have never been victims of such trauma, those who have been victimized often use food as a coping method. If you have underlying issues, seeking professional help can bring about transformation in your life and change your relationship with food.

Lifestyle and Habits Probably the most prevalent reason of what causes obesity, lifestyle and habits have a direct impact on weight and other body issues. Take a closer look at your lifestyle. If you are like most people, there are some things that should be changed in order to resolve a weight problem. How much television do you watch? Do you spend a lot of time engaged in non-productive computer activity, or do you play a lot of video games? You may need to give your electronics a lot less face time.

Habits form and reform over time. Are you in the habit of drinking enough water, moving your body on a regular basis, and cooking healthy meals most of the time? If not, then you may be drinking too much alcohol, soda, or other calorie-heavy beverages instead of pure life-giving water. You may need to create an intentional exercise habit. And, you may need to take a close look at your eating habits. Small changes, made over time, really do make an enormous difference in the way you feel and look.

Friends and Family as a Negative Influence Do you equate food with love? Do you, your friends, or your family members use food to celebrate? When you gather together, is food the central player in the game? Encourage more activity and focus your celebrations on something other than food for greater success. Eating should be fun and pleasurable; learning ways to create healthy versions of old favorites can help you and those you care about to make positive changes.

Low Self-Esteem Low self-esteem is harmful in many ways. It can lead to depression, addiction, and severe obesity. The problem compounds on itself, and the more you gain, the worse you may feel. Normally, low self-esteem begins in childhood and continues on into adulthood, causing a whole host of problems, from underachievement to relationship problems. Take your self-esteem pulse. How do you feel about yourself most of the time? Do you love yourself for who you are, and for your ability to love, create, and add to the world, or do you hold yourself in low regard? Learning to love yourself is one of the most transformational processes you may ever go through and it will affect every area of your life. It's not selfish to have great self-esteem; instead, it makes you into a better person. Once you learn to love yourself, you will be much better equipped to take good care of your body via healthy lifestyle changes.

Lack of Nutritional Education Despite federal guidelines for nutrition, and despite media attempts to educate the public about the importance of good nutrition, many of us just haven't gotten the message yet. Take the time to learn about which foods are best for your body. Learn more about the foods you ought to avoid, too. Educating yourself about what processed foods contain and where they come from is very likely to change the way you view your food. Eliminating them can bring about a major transformation.

While these five top reasons of what causes obesity are common, there are others. Prescription and non-prescription drugs can have an effect on your metabolism, and some diseases can have a direct effect on your weight. The amount of alcohol you drink plays a role in your weight, and so do your genetics, to a certain extent. Learning as much as you can about what's causing you to be overweight is the key to successful weight loss. The more you know, the better prepared you will be to begin making changes that will bring about greater well-being and a much happier life.
