The Basics of WordPress - Part 4

April 13, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 118

The time has come. We are going to look at the "Editor". I will continue with widgets and plugins in my next post. As always, I recommend you read parts 1 to 3 of my tutorials, if you haven't already. Ok, so I need to clarify some little things before we begin.

  1. WordPress is built in PHP, A UNIX programming language.
  2. I am not a PHP developer, and I won't talk about PHP in this series.
  3. You don't need to know PHP to be able to use WordPress or the Editor.

Lets head over there now, go to Appearance/Editor. You will likely be greeted by a box filled with some alien language in the middle of your page, and a lot of links on the right. This code you can see is PHP. So, if I'm not going to talk about PHP in this series, why have I brought you to the Editor? There are a few reasons for this.

  1. CSS. Your stylesheet also happens to be in the Editor. We can change the look of our HTML in here.
  2. Its not all foreign. Look carefully, in amongst the PHP is something slightly easier to understand. HTML code! We can edit this.

One more thing before we start: ALWAYS MAKE A BACKUP! Copy the code you are about to edit into notepad or something before you start. I also don't recommend playing around with PHP unless you are sure of what you're doing. You could break your WordPress installation. If you know how to access your FTP server, I also recommend making a backup of your WordPress installation directly, just in case.

OK, so on to the editor. Lets scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page, we are looking for something named "stylesheet.css" or something similar. Open it up and take a look. This is pure, unedited CSS code. You can edit every little element of your site in terms of style, directly from this sheet. Play around with Google Chrome, it is an amazing tool for web designers. View the source of your page, look for the names of CSS elements you want to change, and go ahead and change them in your stylesheet!

I bet I know what you're thinking right now. You want to put your logo at the bottom of the page, in your footer! Not a problem. Open up "footer.php" in the editor, type the image insert code into Notepad: <img src="/YourImageURL" alt="Name It Something" /> and paste it into your footer.php code. Note, if you don't know PHP, you will have no idea where you are putting your code. Helpful tip, look for a little comment in the PHP that says "End" or some sort of HTML closing tag "/>". This is a very primitive way of doing it, but you will find your way around eventually. I recommend you also keep another separate page open with your actual website, so you can refresh it every time you have changed something in the code, and see what it looks like.

That's it for today. Happy WordPressing!
