The Vocab of Volleyball

December 16, 2011 | Comments: 0 | Views: 152

A few terms that tend to stump new players are libero and back row attack. In this article, I have put together a list of words that are very useful to know when playing volleyball. Hopefully they will make sense after you give them a look over.

Dig: the act of playing a ball that has been spiked by the other team. You have "dug" the ball if another player hits a ball at you and you get it up to be played by your team.

Double Contact: a player hits the ball twice in succession or the ball contacts various parts of his/her body in succession. The first contact of the volleyball on a team's side is allowed to be double contacted, such as in a dig or serve receive.

Dump: instead of setting the volleyball, the setter may "dump" the ball to an open spot on the court on the other side of the net.

Free Ball: this happens when the other team passes the ball over the net instead of spiking it for a kill. Many teams will run special plays on free balls because it is the easiest ball to pass to the setter This is generally an easy ball to pass so many teams will get kills off of the free ball.

Hit, Spike, Attack: follows the set and is a hard hitting attempt at getting the ball down on the other side of the net.

Joust: happens when the ball comes down on top of the net and one player from each side tries the push the ball to the opposite side of the net. The players literally push the ball against each other until the ball goes one way or the other.

Pass: two-handed contact where the player raised the ball over their head; used in defense, on a serve receive or setting.

Pepper: done by two players, the two do a constant bump, set, spike routine. This is an excellent warm-up and really the best way to get warmed-up for a game or practice.

Rally: happens when the two teams keep returning each other's attempts at killing the volleyball.

Roof, Stuff, Six Pack: if you block someone and ball goes straight down on the hitter's side, you just "roofed" them.

Rotation: after a side out, when the team moves clockwise around the court to cycle through the serving position.

Seam: a block that has a hole in it because the two blockers are not close enough to each other has a seam.

Serve: the action that gets play going.

Set: a type of touch that enables the setter direct the volleyball to an attacker.

Shot: instead of attacking a volleyball, a player may set, tip, or roll the volleyball at a spot on the court.

Tip: instead of spiking the volleyball, a player may choose to tip the ball up and over the block.
