3 Effective Passing Drills to Help Improve Your Scoring Chances in Volleyball

April 18, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 168

Passing is the most important skill in volleyball. Passing drills should be a principal in your every practice. The game of volleyball begins with a good pass. If you do a great job in passing the ball to your teammate with accuracy, your offense will be unstoppable. Every offense centers on the ability of the players to pass the ball, incorporating passing drills into your every practice is critical. One can never pass the ball in excess.

The first drill we will first concentrate on is a drill centered on passing the ball after it is served. This means, the first pass. This drill is one that I suggest all the team members participate in it as it will be beneficial. To run the drill, you will need to have someone serving the ball. The rest of the team will go to the opposite side of the court to receive the ball and, of course, pass the ball. Only one player should be inside the court at any given time. The purpose of this drill is to focus on the passers and ensure they are moving their feet to get to the ball, are in the correct passing position, and square their body to their target. Look for passing accuracy before moving your passer off the court and bringing another in.

The next drill is also very simple to do. In this drill, you will need at least four passers in order for the drill to work effectively. Start off by dividing the players; two on each side. Next, seeing that you are one of the four passers, toss the ball to the passing line on the opposite side (no net needed). After you toss the ball, stay put until you yourself pass the ball. Once the first passer passes the ball, he/she will run over to the line on the opposite side (where they/you just passed the ball to). This is a great drill for warm-ups. As it will require the passer to hustle and move to the opposite line.

The third drill that I will share with you is a drill that requires a little more concentration and coordination. It is a little more advanced, but it is a great drill that enhances a player's communication with his/her team. Most players are familiar with the volleyball term, pepper. Pepper passing is always used by teams in an effort to warm up their players before a game. The pepper drill that I like to include in training is one that aids in team building, and works on all aspects of volleyball. This drill requires three people in order to have a three pass pepper. With one player standing in the middle of the other two players (allow enough room for passing, setting and attacking the ball), begin by passing the ball to the player in the middle who will act as the setter. The setter in the middle will then set it right back to the person that passed the ball. The passer will now become the hitter and will spike the ball to the person on the opposite side. Once the hitter spikes the ball, he/she will then become the setter. The setter will then become the one who digs the hit.
