What VoIP Is And How It Works

May 24, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 123

VoIP, or Voice over Internet Protocol is fast making the old analog telephone obsolete. But what is VoiP and how is it changing the way we communicate?

Basically VoIP is a hi-tech way of turning analog audio signals, like the ones you hear over traditional telephones, and converting them into digital format so that it can be sent via the internet. Now instead of paying extra for long distance calls, or even local calls for that matter, you can now make phone calls to anyone in the world for free. VoIP is basically a more practical "re-invention" of the classic telephone.

How does VoIP Work?

Basically with VoIP, you take the analog signals that comes from a microphone, chop it into many different parts (known as packets), and send them one-by-one over the internet to person waiting at the other end. Basically, the receiver of the call is downloading the digitized sound at high speed and playing it back.

Actually VoIP has been around for a couple of years, ever since the 1990's in fact. The problem back then was the low internet bandwidth; basically the internet was not fast enough for VoIP. Only recently, with the advent of high-speed internet, did VoIP become really feasible.

As of now, there are three ways that people are using VoIP:

ATA - The ATA, or analog telephone adapter, is a device that connects to your standard phone that takes the analog signal coming from it, transforms it into digital format, and then sends it over the internet towards the recipient at the other end. All you do is take the RJ-11 connector of your old phone, connect it to the ATA, and then connect the ATA to your router. These days, most phone companies are shipping ATAs for free to whoever subscribes to their VoIP service.

IP Phones - These phones actually look like your conventional telephone but instead of plugging into a traditional RJ-11 connectors, it has an ethernet cable and an RJ-45 connector so that you can directly connect it to your internet router at home, there are even some wi-fi models that you can use wherever there is a wi-fi connection. The beauty about IP phones is that you do not have to use an ATA to use them, you can use them straight out of the box. Some IP phones also have video conferencing capabilities that lets you stream video as well as sound over the internet.

Computer to Computer Calls - This is probably the easiest way to make VoIP calls since everybody these days seem to have a computer with an internet connection, speakers and microphones anyway. The only thing that is needed to make a computer able to make VoIP calls is just install the necessary software; which by the way is completely free. You can also make VoIP calls from any smartphone too, since they are basically scaled down computers.

VoIP has certainly changed the way the world communicates. With the Internet and VoIP, the world has become a smaller place.
