VoIP Vs The Traditional Phone Services

May 28, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 101

Voice over internet protocol or VoIP is getting more and more popular nowadays and many people are using the technology to make calls. A lot of people are saying that there are advantages that you can get if you use VoIP phone services. But there is a debate on whether this service can replace the traditional phone system. So what are the differences between the VoIP and the traditional phone services?

The process of transmitting data

For the traditional phones, circuit switching is used to connect the call between two parties. When you dial a number, the connection will go to your local switch office through the public switched telephone network, which consists of several cables interconnected by switching centers. It will then go to the local switch office of the other party and will be transmitted to the recipient.

The VoIP uses a packet switching telephony system. In this system, the voice data, which is analog, is converted into digital data and transmitted through the use of the internet. The digital data is then converted back to analog signal if the other party has a regular telephone. VoIP has a more efficient system in transmitting the data because the data doesn't have to travel physically through copper wires.

Costs

The main reason why people are shifting to VoIP is the cost of the service. VoIP offers low-cost and free-calling plans. Basic features such as call waiting and call forwarding are free of charge in VoIP services but they are charged per feature in traditional phones.

VoIP phone service plans range from $30 to $40 while traditional service can cost up to hundreds of dollars because of the features and other charges. The plans of VoIP usually have unlimited calls to United States and Canada.

Features

Aside from the standard features, there are advanced features offered at no cost by VoIP such as virtual voice mail, simultaneous ringing, online account management and call block. These amazing features ensure that you will receive every important call and reject calls from people you do not like such as telemarketers.

Reliability

When it comes to reliability, it is no doubt that the traditional phone is more reliable than the VoIP services. This is because VoIP only functions when internet connection is available and when there is power. So in case there is an internet downtime or power outage, you cannot use your VoIP phone.

Emergency calls are also more reliable in traditional phone service but VoIP companies are now enhancing their 911 calls. With the traditional phone, the address of the caller will immediately appear on the screen of the operator because it is location-based. In VoIP, the caller needs to tell the address to the operator.

In general, VoIP offer more benefits than the traditional phone services. As long as the internet is up and there is power, VoIP will work well. The features also ensure that you will not miss an important call.
