The Future of Hardware-Based VoIP Phones

June 07, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 125

VoIP brings the flexibility of the Internet to the old paradigm of the PSTN phone system. But with the smartphone revolution, land lines themselves seem to be facing a slow decline. Many of us rely almost exclusively on mobile phones and smartphones for communication inside and outside the office. This makes sense since we only have to worry about one device no matter where we go. Does this mean that the utility of a traditional landline is limited? And by extension, does this imply that hardware-based VoIP phones are simply struggling to replicate an outdated model?

It's a difficult question to answer. To a great deal it will depend on the role that landline phones still play in an office-based environment. The design of the modern landline has adapted over the years to make it an ideal device for talking on the phone for a long time without discomfort. The shape of the handset as well as the ability to hold it between your year and shoulder and carrying on with your other tasks has proved to be tremendously useful. Mobile phones, despite their ubiquity and convenience cannot match the ergonomics of a landline phone.

In addition, many roles in an organization demand a common communication point that everyone can use regardless of who happens to be around at that moment. A receptionist in a front office is a good example of this even though they too are being replaced by IVR systems. Nonetheless, such a feature can be very important and cannot be fulfilled with any kind of mobile communication system. As an "office phone", the landline is irreplaceable.

Ironically, a wired phone is even more suitable for VoIP than for a traditional PSTN call. This is because modern VoIP systems will use HD voice whenever possible. This means that communication will be clearer. However, a hardware VoIP phone will likely be designed in such a way so as to make the maximum use of acoustics to take advantage of HD voice features. All this implies that if a person gets used to using VoIP with a wired phone, they will quickly get spoiled by it.

While it is true that these phones have traditionally been more expensive than regular land lines, this trend is quickly changing. In addition, if you obtain VoIP service with an SIP provider that has a tie up with a hardware VoIP phone manufacturer, you will be able to obtain them at discounted rates with the additional benefit of having them being able to configure, maintain and update themselves automatically. In all, despite the continuing spread of mobile telephony, hardware-based VoIP phones still have a place in a traditional business environment.
