For one to fully understand the Voice Over Internet Protocol technology here is a glossary of VoIP-related terms.

Analog Telephone

The traditional telephone that transmits audio data through a telephone line is called analog telephone. The voice data it produces is called the analog audio signal.

Analog Telephone Adapter/Adaptor (ATA)

ATA is the hardware device that enables a traditional analog phone to be used as a VoIP phone by connecting it to a computer with Internet connection.

Bandwidth

Bandwidth is the quantity of data that can be transmitted over a communication line in a certain period of time. It is basically a measure of connection speed and is expressed in bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, and gigabytes per second.

Broadband

VoIP requires a fast Internet connection and usually, it is achieved through a broadband connection. Broadband is a term, which means high speed, and cable TV or Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) telecommunication companies generally provide this connection.

Digital Subscriber Line (DSL)

DSL provides high-speed transmission of data. It consists of circuits that are always connected with each other. It requires no dial up and switching because a DSL line is directly connected to a carrier's system, thus fast Internet connection.

Internet Protocol (IP)

All the signals found on the Internet is made up of data packets.

The Internet Protocol determines the way these data packets should be transmitted over the Internet, between the source and the destination. It is a communication language that defines the procedures, which data packets should follow.

Internet Protocol telephony

IP telephony is the two-way transmission of audio signals over the Internet. Through the packet-switched technology, these audio signals are transmitted over the network Internet protocol. IP-based phone services, voice over instant messaging, and video calling and conference use the IP telephony.

Private Branch Exchange (PBX)

IP PBX is a telephone switching system that works by switching calls between VoIP users on local lines and allowing them to share external phone lines.

Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN)

PSTN is an interconnected audio-oriented public telephone network consisting of a collection of telephone lines and fiber optics, that provides basically the entire internet's long distance communication system.

Service Providers

A service provider is a company that provides telecommunications services with a corresponding amount of money. The Internet service providers (ISP), application service providers (ASP), mobile phone service providers, and VoIP service providers are only some examples of these companies.

Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP)

VoIP is a communication protocol, which converts analog audio signals into digital form, making transmission via the Internet possible. It allows the standard telephone connection to serve as a practical way of placing long distance calls at very affordable rates without sacrificing call quality. It contains different call features such as call conference, call recordings, caller ID customization, direct inward dialing, and call transfer.

Wi-Fi

Wireless Fidelity is a wireless connection technology allowing multiple devices to connect through the Internet without having to directly linking itself to the broadband modem. It is a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) that enables connection to the Internet through a wireless network access point. Wi-Fi is achieved with a high-speed Internet connection and a router.
