Do It Yourself: How to Setup VoIP in Your Home

April 17, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 159

If you've heard about Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) systems, you'll probably know how they cut the cost of phone calls to any number of locations in the world while allowing features that simply weren't available with your old landline, such as video conferencing. You may be tempted to set up a VoIP network for your own home - and don't let anything stop you! It's easy, it's low cost, and all you need to do is follow these tips on how to setup VoIP in your home.

The first and most important of thing you need to have before you start setting up is a broadband Internet connection, as it is through this that you will be transmitting your calls. Following this, pick and choose the VoIP plan, equipment and software that you'll want to use. Do your research and think carefully about this: pick a plan that fits your budget and your needs. Remember that VoIP systems are inoperable during power outages, and that internet traffic during peak hours can degrade service.

If you'd like to access a VoIP network with your phone, the first thing you'll need to do is check your home phone to see if it can be used with VoIP or Skype. If it mentions neither of these, you'll have to get a VoIP adapter. This is what will serve as the bridge between the IP network and your telephone: your adapter will convert the analog signal of your voice during a phone call into digital data that can be sent over the internet. There are several types of VoIP adapters, but it won't be hard to pick the one that is right for you.

Follow the instructions provided with the adapter to set it up. When you're done, your phone ought to be connected via the adapter to your router, and via your router to your broadband internet connection, with your phone attached to the router with a standard phone line.

To get all of this up and running, plug in and switch on the VoIP adapter, and wait for it to start up. During this process, additional updates and software may be downloaded automatically, so be patient and make sure you don't inadvertently unplug the adapter from either the broadband modem or the power source.

When it is indicated that your VoIP setup is finished, pick your phone to listen for a dial tone. If your hear one, you've successfully navigated how to setup VoIP in your home, and can begin making your calls.

There are alternatives on how to setup VoIP in your home, should you find fiddling with a router and your telephone too challenging. Following the purchase of a headset and a microphone, for instance, all you'll need to do is to download VoIP software (this is sometimes available for free, as in the case of Skype) and install it in your PC. This type of home VoIP network enables video chatting, if you have the prerequisite web camera handy.
