Choosing a Free SIP Provider

February 21, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 211

Business users of VoIP solutions will probably be better off with a professional and paid SIP provider who is able to give them the quality of service that they need. The additional features of a paid account include telephone numbers for each employee, and round-the-clock service. Home users however have much more restrictive requirements and will be just as well off with a free SIP provider. Of course, this just means that the service is free. Calls which go over the PSTN network in either the US or in any other country will be charged - albeit at a lower rate. Naturally calls made to any other SIP provider's clients will be free.

So what criteria do you use to determine which provider to go with? There are so many of them that it's difficult to choose specially for someone who's new to this. In my experience, one of the first things I look at is how far away the provider is from my location. Most calls are made to people within the country and I would like my SIP provider to be as close to me as possible so that there is less distance between their servers and my VoIP device. So once I have a list of providers who are in the same country as I am, I move on to the next step.

Certain providers don't implement basic VoIP functionalities such as SIP forking. Callcentric is one such provider and its sad that they don't allow it because to me, SIP forking is one of the most innovative and basic features of any VoIP system. This is part of a larger process of finding out which features are important to you and then narrowing down your providers based on what they offer.

Now we come to one of the most important technical aspects. Many providers have conflicting policies about how they integrate with various SIP clients. For some, the username is just the first part of the SIP address. Others can have different policies and have separate usernames instead. All this tends to create confusion in the minds of the customers and makes it difficult to integrate with various SIP clients. In addition, many other details might be required to be configured in the SIP client in a nonstandardized way.

To me, the ideal SIP provider is one which makes it easy to use with any SIP client and has simple naming procedures - not one which tries to mimic a telephone system.
