Advanced Broadband Connections Are a Necessity for VoIP

July 05, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 173

It would be an understatement today to say that an Internet connection is important. We use it for our work, our personal lives, to pay our bills and for shopping. Yet it's no secret that the United States lags behind many European countries when it comes to the provision of powerful and cheap broadband. There are many factors that contribute to this including the low-density and large geographic area of the United States. European countries on the other hand are more compact. Another factor that is often overlooked however is that telecom companies in the US have a disproportionate amount of power over the local government. This leads to some curious outcomes when customers try to rectify the lack of broadband infrastructure on their own.

It is well known that many telecom companies do not find it profitable to provide state-of-the-art broadband in certain areas due to the low population density. This provides them with a lower return on investment and leaves a gaping hole when it comes to the availability of broadband for everyone. Naturally, citizens living in these areas would like to take matters into their own hand and band together to provide Internet connectivity where the telecom companies have failed to do so. Municipal broadband is often touted as a solution to this problem and is a way for everyone to chip in and build a powerful Internet backbone that can be used by everyone.

Unfortunately, such proposals don't go down too well with the established telecom firms who see a threat to their business models. Under the garb of fighting "socialism", many companies have successfully appealed in the courts against municipal broadband projects saying that they constitute unfair competition against them. This is a tragedy not only for the customers, but also for those Internet-based technologies that rely heavily upon robust and inexpensive network connectivity. VoIP is one example of an application that requires constant online connectivity. It is also doubly threatening because of the nature of its service that puts it in direct competition with established carriers. Unfortunately, these carriers are also the ones that provide us with Internet services. Hence the conflict of interest.

South Carolina for example has recently prohibited municipalities from putting together their own broadband networks. This has been a big win for the telecom carriers as expected. Whether or not this will set a precedent for further states is yet to be seen. We can only hope that better sense prevails and that folks can work together to provide this important service when private corporations fail to step up to the plate.
