Become a Trained Electrician

With the job market still remaining critical it could be the right time to think about retraining. Electricians are still sought after; they are required in this country and many others such as Australia and New Zealand. If you wish to create a career for yourself, or want to be considered a suitable candidate to emigrate trade skills can be a positive move to make.

If you are thinking of becoming a trained electrician there are some excellent courses available which will help kick start your career as a domestic electrician. With just seven weeks of training you can learn all of the basics and start putting your skills into practice. The electrical training course will teach you the theory and practical skills for foundation level electrical systems. It includes topics such as:

  • How to safely isolate electric circuits
  • Electrical diagrams
  • Cables and wiring
  • Test instrumentation
  • Safe practices when working with electricity

After the first week all candidates then embark on five weeks of domestic electrician workshop training. During these weeks students learn and develop their skills through practical training in a fully equipped workshop. By the end of these period candidates with have completed many practical tasks including:

  • How to complete lighting circuits
  • Power circuits
  • Fuse board changes
  • Wiring and bonding in kitchens and bathrooms
  • Fixed equipment circuits

By the end of the fifth week successful students are awarded with the EAL Level 2 Domestic Installer Scheme certificate and the City and Guilds 17th Edition Wiring Regulations. The 17th Edition training course is certainly beneficial and is vital for anyone that has to have a clear understanding of the British Standard BS 7671 regulations. To progress even further the sixth week can be completed. During this training period the students work towards the City and Guilds Fundamental Inspection, Testing and Initial Verification of Electrical Installations certificate that is awarded to those who pass the weeks training.

Starting Your Own Business

On week seven the focus is on how to start your own business as an electrician. This is called the Business Development Module. During the week candidates learn about how to create a business plan, sales and marketing, financing and how to plan to make profits and the importance of providing high standards of customer service.
