A Look at What the Medical Coding Industry Is About

April 03, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 125

Every single day, the health care field in America grows stronger as a driving force in the national economy. The demand for medical professionals such as physicians and nurses has skyrocketed in recent years, and these medical careers are constantly in demand. However, all of these jobs are hands on, and require the professional to be in direct proximity with those who are ill or hurt. Due to this, the working conditions can be very stressful and difficult. However, medical coding is a bit different.

Medical Coding Training

Professional medical coders, sometimes called medical classification, is a medical profession that allows you to be an integral part of a hospital or practice without directly contacting any patients, and you get to work typical schedules, such as nine to five. This is really quite a benefit when compared to the rotating shifts of most medical careers.

As a medical coder, you would be taking the valuable data given to you by doctors, including test results, notes, and laboratory results, and transform that data into a coding system. This coding system lets that information be easily accessed via software by any of the medical staff that will be dealing with the patient in the future, including medical billing.

Types of coding

Medical coding is considered one of two different things, either nomenclatures or statistical classifications. Nomenclature coding uses a very strict set of codes for each type of medical condition or concept, and statistical classification uses various categories and groups things together to form the medical codes.

What you will learn in a medical coding course

If you take a coding course, you should expect to cover a lot of different topics. Due to the nature of the coding industry, you will need to learn more than just the basic data entry most commonly associated with the profession. You will have to familiarize yourself with a lot of different medical terminology, and learn about most types of conditions and their treatments while studying coding. This is mandatory, because you will regularly be interpreting medical records and data that uses this terminology.

Because of this split focus, you will spend time learning about both sides of coding. You will have to learn each major category of classification, including things like medical subject heading and nursing outcome classifications. There are quite a few internationally endorsed codes, and something known as the FIC, or Family of International Classification manages health codes from nation to nation.

Medical coding is more than just making money though. Medical coding allows for a smother and overall better management of data. The level of importance that medical codes bring to medicine is incredible, and without it, the entire medical profession would be completely uninterpretable, useless, and the data one field generates would be useless in another. The classifications you provide as a medical coder are important utensils in the overall recovery process, and well trained medical coders offer a service that not only increases the level of medical support hospitals and practices can provide for their patients, but also improve the future of the industry.
