8 Ways to Save Money While in Mechanic Training

April 16, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 159

Part of the reason you have decided to become a mechanic is that you know it will make you a good living. But getting by while you are still in mechanic training is another matter altogether. Here are some relatively easy ways for a student in a mechanic program to tighten his or her budget.

1. Have a roommate

Living alone can be expensive. Keep your living costs low by finding roommates to share a place with. Better yet, room with people from your mechanic program, so that you can carpool to and from mechanic training, if necessary. You may even be able to save money on textbooks by buying one copy for the entire household to share.

2. Brownbag it

Pack a lunch to take to your mechanic training. Spending just $5 a day on lunches out over the course of your mechanic program can really add up.

3. Revise your communications bill

Have you talked to your communications provider lately? Are you sure that you have the best cellphone plan for you? And do you really need cable TV while you are so preoccupied by mechanic training? Keeping on top of your communications bill and staying in touch with your provider can save you a lot of money while you are in your mechanic program.

4. Go on a cash-only diet

Studies show that consumers are less likely to spend when they have cash rather than plastic in their wallet. Start the habit early in your mechanic program of taking out a set amount of money for each week. Once it's gone, it's gone. A surefire way to put the brakes on overspending. Guarantees that when you become a mechanic that you won't have any consumer debt to contend with.

5. Eat rice and beans

This is a money-saving method often promoted by American personal finance guru Dave Ramsey. While you become a mechanic, you should only be spending about $200 a month on food. Eating healthy, whole foods can make it easier for you to respect your food budget while in mechanic training.

6. Discover your local library

Your mechanic training has you salivating for glossy car magazines. But there's no need to shell out for subscriptions. Look for your magazines at your local library.

7. Raise your deductibles

Will you be driving your car to mechanic training? You may want to phone your insurance company to raise the deductible that you are willing to pay in the event of an accident. This is just one of the many small ways that you can save money as you become a mechanic. If you have house insurance, you may want to do the same.

8. Cook from the pantry challenge

Once a month, clear out your pantry shelves and challenge yourself to make a meal using only what you already have. This prevents waste and saves money as you pursue mechanic training.
