Make Your Own Comic Book

Can you make your own comic book?

Do you have what it takes to make your own comics? You probably can do it if you only knew how. Based on some of the work that gets published, I'm pretty certain that anyone has the ability to make their own book. It's the process that eludes most people.

You don't have to work for Marvel or DC to make your own comic book. The days are over when the rank amateur couldn't create and publish their work. There are a few things that you need. First, you need a story to tell. Next, you need to know how to work a pencil. And lastly, you need access to an On Demand Publisher. On Demand Publishing is the great equalizer in the Internet Era.

With these basic ingredients, anyone can make a comic book with their own two hands and bring it to the market for the masses. We will expand on these points.

Characters and story go hand in hand. You need characters to drive your story and a story to give your characters something to do. This "something to do" should be the motivation for your characters. Your idea should evolve into a path that takes your characters from one plot point to the next. I like to use a simple outline to organize my story ideas. Then I expand on and detail the story sequences. During this process, I am thinking about dialogue. Your story (at this point) starts looking just like a script. Once you have your "script," you're ready to translate it into comic book artwork.

I jokingly said earlier that anyone who can work a pencil can make a comic book. The truth is that the ability to draw is an asset, but not a necessity. There are many comic books out there where the artwork is less than stellar; yet the stories keep people reading. There are also tremendous artists that can't write a compelling story.

Professional comic books are made with the collaboration of many people. There is usually a person who writes, another who pencils, another who inks, another who letters and so on... But since you're doing this all yourself, you don't have that luxury. You're a one man/woman show and its success rests all on your shoulders.

Many comic book writers actually include in their scripts what is to go in each panel of a comic book page. That's a useful method if you have a page count limit. I don't really like to do that. With On Demand publishing there is no limit, but I'll get to that in a bit. My method is to quickly sketch the pages following the script and let them develop organically. I allow for changes if I think of a better idea while I'm drawing.

After the sketching process is completed, including dialogue, read it through to see how it looks and make sure the story can be followed as you intended. If it is to your liking, you can start the process of finalizing your pencils. Once that is done, you can ink your work.

Inking should be done with black inking pens that are available in several line weights. Practice inking on copies of your final penciled drawings. Once you've finished inking your work and have a finished Comic Book, you need to set up an account with an On Demand Publisher.

On Demand Publishing is relatively new and has become the great equalizer. I recommend an On Demand Publisher like Createspace to set up your free account and make your book available for sale. On Demand Publishing is a process whereby you submit your book digitally to the On Demand Publisher. Your book goes on sale at and some other venues. When someone buys it, the on demand publisher prints it and ships it to them. You, in turn, get paid a royalty on each copy sold. With these basic ingredients and a little knowledge of the process, anyone can make your own comic book.
