Key Tips for Hanging Art Installations

April 18, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 99

Hanging art is an interior design activity many people do not give much thought. Most disregard it because the activity is simple enough. It is as simple as getting something framed, finding a spot on the wall, and then putting it up. When you really think about it, there is more to the process than meets the eye. There is a variety of techniques to keep in mind when hanging art. Here are a few things to remember if you plan to install framed photographs, paintings, or even mirrors.

Think about your wall and furniture size

These are the two most fundamental techniques to getting it done right. The general rule is to use smaller pieces for narrow and tight walls, and bigger ones for the same wall size. You could also use tricks like bordering larger pieces with smaller ones. This creates a focal point and turns the bare space into something more attractive.

Professional picture hangers also suggest you consider furniture size. Do not hang up artworks longer than the width of the furniture it accents. It should complement the furniture instead of taking the spotlight away. You can use pieces up to 75% of the width of the furniture it accentuates.

Lighting is important

The use of proper lighting will help give emphasis to the installation. It is always best to use walls with good preexisting lighting. This will help cut down costs and make choosing what to hang up easier. You could also experiment with track lighting and spotlights. Figure out which works best and gives the installation more drama. Improper lighting can cause the artwork to look dull and boring. Avoid wasting the piece of fine art by displaying it properly.

Complimenting colors

Do not ever forget the role of colors in the overall aesthetic of the room. Hanging art that clashes with the color of the walls and furniture is not a very good idea. It ruins the overall ambience of the room and can be distracting. Avoid this problem by keeping your color palette in mind as you shop for the piece you are going to install. You can also renovate the room and use the artwork as inspiration for what the rest of the room looks like.

Picture hangers generally recommend black and white photographs for any room color. These are neutral and adapt to the preexisting design scheme. Such installations can also add a contemporary touch to your home. Give it some thought if you are trying to achieve this goal.

Horizontal versus Vertical

Using the right lines can make all the difference when hanging art. Figure out what you want to achieve. Go vertical if you are aiming to add the illusion of height to your space. Horizontal installations on the other hand, elongate and widen a space. Check out the aesthetics of the room and see which will work best.

You can also go off track by breaking the rules. Diagonals can promote a more casual feel because it avoids the formalities of a symmetrical setup. Asymmetrical arrangements are uncommon and can be a conversation piece when arranged the right way.

Consult with professional interior designers or picture hangers for more tips regarding art installation at home. These experts can give you the necessary advice to turn your bare walls into a work of art in itself.
