Capturing Film: The Basics

June 06, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 109

Mobile technology has spawned a new digital age, enabling companies to provide content to their constituency on a daily basis. Everyone walks around with an internet-ready video player in their pocket, and as marketers, we need to pounce on the opportunity to use video to speak to our customers.

Another breakthrough has been the improvement of the camera phone. Capturing video is now easier than ever, and the quality is improving every day. However, many times the person that has an opportunity to capture a great moment has little or no filming experience. Rather than miss the opportunity to capture one of a kind video footage, follow some simple steps that will make your video entertaining and usable.

Pre Shot

First, you should be organized. Get an idea of what you want to shoot, and the sequence in which you will shoot it. Storyboarding the shots is ideal, but at a minimum have an idea in your head before you start shooting of what you're trying to capture.

If possible, use a tripod, in order to prevent the camera from moving. If you don't have access to a tripod, or are shooting with a phone or iPad, the easiest way to create a steady shot is to zoom out and physically move close to the subject matter; this has the added benefit of improving your audio. You can also place your camera on steady surface, but know that vibrations from people walking around will affect the shot. If filming with a still camera or a camera phone, remember to keep the camera oriented in landscape mode.

Shoot shots separately rather than reframing while filming. If you want motion in your shots, only move the camera slowly and smoothly in one direction. When shooting on a camera using heavy compression (the majority of camera phones) fast movement will badly affect image quality and smoothness. Make sure that you zoom and focus on your focus matter before filming, rather than during the shots.

Conduct interviews with people if possible. Establishing a context and capturing a testimonial is an outstanding marketing technique, and it is often difficult to return to a site and recapture an interview. Shoot plenty of material, it is always better to have too much rather than too little, and it is difficult to recapture the experience of a shoot on a different day.

Obviously you want your shots to be as well lit as possible, but don't mix two sources of light, such as natural light and fluorescent. This will make the colors appear strange. Don't shoot directly into the light, against a very light or very dark background, or facing anything reflective.

Without sophisticated audio equipment, the most important factor when recording audio is ambient noise. Things that our brains hear every day and ignore are picked up by the equipment. Ensure you are in a quiet area, away from machinery or roads if you're outside, and if inside, stay away from general work areas (find a quiet conference room), make sure phones are silenced, and people are moving around as little as possible during shooting.
