Video Conferencing - Five Ways It Can Be Used In The Classroom

June 09, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 142

Why It Should Be Considered

When it comes to educating our students, solutions utilizing video based services are not exactly new. In fact, numerous schools throughout the US are deploying video conferencing to bring knowledge to the classroom in various subjects. The following five considerations represent examples of how the educational system can benefit from a given web service.

(1) Arrange Virtual Field Trips

Actual field trips require a fair amount of planning and preparation. You have the concerns of transportation and the ongoing monitoring of the students. Video conferencing allows one the luxury of bringing a particular subject matter to life. A classic example of this revolved around students being able to view an actual volcano in Montserrat. The individual who was the lead spokesperson on site merely relayed information about what the students were seeing right back to their laptops. Online video proved to be far more engaging than just reading about volcanic activity.

(2) Bring Experts Into The Classroom

Video services enable students to develop their communication skills. Additionally they are able to learn about world issues by speaking with experts in various fields face to face. One example that comes to mind involved students who had difficulty with their writing skills. A specific expert was brought in by way of video conferencing to address this issue and the students in attendance improved notably. People who are knowledgeable and are associated with entities such as learning centers', museums and non-profit organizations can support this concern.

(3) Have Students Work Together

Video conferencing permits classrooms from different schools to contact and interact with each other. In the past this certainly would have been restrictive but this technology has opened up this collaborative activity. Benefits derived from this video form of exchange extend to fresh view points and different ideas. One such joint discussion enabled students to develop a deeper understanding of the job application process. This conferencing approach is practical and permits the sharing of quality information.

(4) Introduce Previously Unavailable Subjects

Some schools are not in the position to provide certain subjects. In terms of large countries such as the United States many of these institutions are in rural areas and do not have the means to support this aspect. Traditionally the only solutions available to individuals in this predicament revolved around being mobile and travelling large distances. Having a desktop computer and a camera now negates that issue. One can attend a class that is miles away through video conferencing.

(5) Educate The Teachers Not Just The Students

Teachers themselves must continually update their knowledge base. To maintain their respective certification they are required to put in a certain number of hours dedicated to professional development. Scheduling a video conference is generally an effective and efficient way to achieve the end result. Not only can the teachers derive this additional knowledge but students can also sit in and learn from these video based meetings.

A Final Thought

Now even though these potential solutions pertain to the school room they also extend to the business arena. Instead of having to incur the cost of flying individuals away to meetings, a given business enterprise can simply stage a conference utilizing video! This communication method is boundless and most effective!
