Kids Off To College: Strategies For Survival

February 15, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 137

For the last 18 or so years, home has been a hub of activity. Always something to do as the kids were growing up. There have been many challenges along the way, but the one constant, was that the kids were always there. Then comes the day when your oldest child heads to college - not just down the road but hundreds of miles away. This is an exciting time as they prepare for college and start to forge out their independence, but also a stressful time as you don't know how you will cope when your 'baby' leaves home. How can you still be part of their everyday lives as your child starts their new college adventure?

The key for your survival is to stay connected and continue the bond that you have forged with your kids over many years. There are several strategies that you can implement to survive the emptiness in your heart and your lives when your kids leave for college.

Firstly there is old-fashioned snail mail; sending letters, postcards and photos. This will keep your kids informed about family events, but given the pressures of college life, will your kids respond, or will it be one-way traffic?

Another strategy is email. Still somewhat impersonal, but your kids use their computers every day, so a short email response will hopefully come your way. Your kids may even connect with you on Facebook if they don't mind sharing the same space with you and their friends. Most often, they would prefer a little bit of privacy from their parents online.

You could always try to 'skype' each other. This requires that you both have a computer with a good internet connection, and are able to schedule an appointment with your kids to have a chat. Unfortunately, it also comes with the frustration of frozen pixelated images, and audio and video that just doesn't sync, plus the threat of computer viruses.

A good way to connect with your kids when they are at college is a cell phone. How great is it to hear how your kids are doing, hear the excitement in their voice, hear about their latest adventures, hear what their dorm is like, and hear about their new friends. Sometimes however call costs can be quite high, but at least you get to speak to your kids and try to forget the distance between you. Just hearing their voice every few days is often not enough for many parents.

What if there was a way that you could see your kids every day, see what their dorm looks like, meet their friends, see the expressions on their face, see the excitement in their eyes, see that they are safe?

Now you can. The very best strategy for parents to stay connected with your kids when they go to college is with a video phone. You can share everyday moments as though you are in the same room. Meet their friends. Check out their dorm. See that they are safe and happy. A video phone will enable you to see your kids with digital quality and clarity 24/7. Most importantly you get to see their smiles and tears and share new experiences.

You simply pick up the video phone handset and dial, exactly the same as you have always done with your traditional handset. No technical skills required. Make calls to any other number, fixed lines or cell phones, with enormous savings over a traditional phone service. Video phone to video phone calls are completely free across the world¸ and have three-way video phone conference capabilities.

Make sure you choose a video phone that delivers the quality and clarity to make your video calls a fantastic experience, packaged with a supplier who will deliver superior service. With the great features and huge savings provided by today's video phones you will wonder how you ever survived without your video phone.
