A Locksmith's Guide to Getting Your Van Ready for Cold Weather

February 16, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 144

Reliable transport is vital to any emergency locksmith, as a key part of the job involves being able to get to the customer in good time in order to solve whatever problem they are faced with. This is why preparing your vehicle and yourself for the winter is so important, in order to ensure you can continue to carry out your work in any conditions.

To be on the safe side, it can be a good idea to have your van checked over by a professional mechanic before the cold weather sets in. While this is probably the most sensible option, there are also a lot of things that you can do yourself to effectively winter-proof your vehicle, without the need for a mechanic.

First, you need to make sure that key parts of the car are working properly, because if they are already faulty then this is only likely to be exacerbated by harsh winter conditions. Check the brakes, the wipers and the heater carefully, because any issues with these could cause you serious problems out on the road.

Next, check that the tires are inflated properly, and the tread is good. Winter in the UK brings rain, ice and occasionally snow, which are the most perilous conditions for driving. If the tread on your tyres has worn away, you could be in danger of skidding on the ice, potentially causing a serious accident.

Another good tip for when you know a cold spell is on the way is to ensure you keep a full tank of petrol as much as possible. Your journeys will take longer in bad weather and there may even be diversions, so it helps to not have to worry about running out of petrol on your way to or from a job.

Also of tantamount importance if you're going to be working through difficult winter conditions is to stock up on all the essential equipment you'll need in the event of an emergency. This includes practical items like a torch and ice scraper, along with other essentials like food and water.

It is also a good idea to make sure there is always a mobile phone in the van or on your person, and that it is kept charged up at all times.

On top of these precautions, there are some daily things you can do in cold periods to minimise the chances of you getting into difficulty out on the roads. These include starting journeys earlier than normal, giving you plenty of time to get to where you're going with allowances made for the weather.

It almost goes without saying that the way you drive also needs to change in wintery conditions. You may need to look farther ahead in the road than normal, and brake sooner and more carefully, because it always takes longer to stop when the road is wet or icy.

These tips should help you overcome the worst of the cold weather, and enable you to stay safe, stay warm and keep performing a locksmith's work throughout the winter.
