The Picturesque Town of Castellina

February 27, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 187

The charming town of Castellina lies in the province of Siena in the Chianti region of Tuscany, Italy. Nestled unostentatiously in the hills south of Florence and north-west of Siena, the town's clustered red-roofs and ageing yellow brick-work are surrounded on all sides by wooded greenery, wild plants and gently sloping hillsides. This rural island of provincial life is populated by around 3,000 inhabitants, and for those who, by chance or otherwise, find themselves in this recess of Chianti - villa rental is the usual springboard - it is, years down the line, an oft-remembered visit.

Brief history

The first record of a settlement in the area is from the Etruscan age. Around the time of the Gaulish invasion of Rome, the town fell apart briefly. But, as the years tumbled by, houses gradually began to spring back up again in succession. Today, for those visiting the town from a Chianti villa rental property, a highlight is indoubtably the 14th century Rocca, or fortress, which boasts, for those curious enough to enter its imposing walls, breath-stealing views of the encircling countryside. A San Salvatore church, which dates back to the 16th century, is, because of its mute beauty and palpable historic legacy, also a popular spot with visitors. And for those who wander slightly further out from the town's walls, the pre-Roman Etruscan burial tombs of Monte Calvario and the Necropolis of Poggino silently await, shrouding the outskirts of the town with a sense of enigma.

Thanks to its quiet charm and ancient backdrop, Castellina is a popular place for tourists (Chinanti villa rental or otherwise) to relax and soak up a bit of history. Besides tourism, however, the town's main focus is the production of wine, and many wineries are located in the vicinity. The town also has a perennially well-reviewed gelateria - that's ice cream shop, for the unitiated - called Antica Gelateria, which is located in quaint, lofty-ceilinged building. The delicious gelato is made fresh and presented with grace and sophistication.

There are other places which are well worth a visit near the town of Castellina in Chianti. Villa rental is a good idea because it allows you to come and go as you please, giving you the option to visit the sprawling - and immensely popular - wineries in the region. Worth a trip as well are the equally beautiful towns surrounding -such as Radda, with its terraced olive groves and vineyards, the hidden commune of Greve, Castello di Volpaia, and Panzano, which is surrounded by several important wineries.
