A Great Reason to Get a Personal Umbrella Policy - Your Car Is a Lethal Weapon!

September 18, 2011 | Comments: 0 | Views: 164

Your auto insurance needs an umbrella. Does that make sense? Yes it does and it may be one of the most important pieces of advice you'll ever receive.

Did you know your car can be a lethal weapon?

In just a matter of seconds your life could go from feeling financially independent to being afraid of losing everything. In my 26 years of being in the insurance business, I've never had a client who said they expected to have a claim. Accidents happen to even the most responsible people. So why even buy insurance if you're never going to have a claim? Some people buy auto insurance just to satisfy the legal requirements. Most of our clients have substantial assets like their home, savings, stocks, boats and other things. They're also smart enough to know that the cost of buying higher limits on their auto insurance is really negligible when they consider the protection they're getting and peace of mind that if they do something that is seriously negligent when driving a car, that their assets will be protected. Remember... A car can be a lethal weapon.

To drive home my point I'm going to indulge you with a tragic story. We had a client who was driving her car home after having dinner at a local restaurant. It was a beautiful Saturday night. The weather was perfect and she had only one cocktail with dinner. To her surprise she hit a motorcyclist that she didn't see until the very last second. The motorcyclist had crashed into the guard rail on the left side of the road. It was a two lane road and poorly lit. My client's Lexus was in the left lane and at 11 pm there weren't many cars on the road. The lights on the motorcycle were off. The wrecked motorcycle was laying flat and barely on the left side of the road.

Only the front tire protruded into the road. The cyclist was laying in the middle of the left lane. The Lexus struck this man and he died within minutes. It was found that the cyclist had not been drinking but hit a pot hole in the road that blew out his front tire. The autopsy revealed that when he was knocked unconscious when he crashed and landed in the middle of the road. That happened only minutes before my client hit and killed him. You may think that my client was not at fault. She had a cocktail at dinner but was not intoxicated. She didn't have the best night vision and couldn't react fast enough to miss the cyclist but the jury wouldn't buy that. She was found negligent. The claim easily used his auto liability limit and fortunately She had an umbrella that picked up the balance.

This is where the umbrella comes in. Even high limits on an auto insurance policy are not sufficient to protect you from a terrible claim. Of course, you aren't planning on a claim. But add an umbrella liability policy for a couple of hundred dollars a year and you're putting a cozy blanket on your peace of mind. If you cause the unthinkable, if your auto insurance has high limits and you carry an umbrella liability policy, you'll have an impressive arsenal to defend you. The marginal cost of adding higher auto liability limits and an umbrella liability policy are peanuts.
