Why Should I Choose a Septic Tank Made of Concrete?

June 04, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 155

In areas where no public sewage system has been implemented, most buildings have what is known as a septic tank. This is an underground storage compartment for holding sewage waste. There are many substances that can be used in the construction of a septic container; so far, only one material remains as the best choice - concrete.

Functional Operation

Many urban dwellers have probably never heard of a septic tank because in medium to large urban areas, there is a large underground network of sewer lines that direct all waste to a treatment facility. In areas unreachable by a municipal system, an alternative means of sanitary waste disposal is a septic tank.

This is a temporary storage compartment that is buried underground for the containment of waste. Each individual household is equipped with at least one of these containers. It is can be made from plastic, fiberglass or concrete, each type with its own advantages and disadvantages.

Due to limited size, these septic containers will eventually fill up and have to be emptied through the use of septic trucks; how often this needs to be done depends on the size of the container. The waste material is then transported to a treatment facility by the truck.

Advantages

When installing a septic tank, it is important to choose the right material as making the wrong choice could result in major problems and costly future expenses. The one material that has truly stood the test of time and still remains as the best option is concrete. Following are some of the major advantages.

  • Durability - One of biggest advantages of concrete is its durability. It is a well-known fact that this material is very long-lasting, especially when it is reinforced with metal which makes it an ideal option. It can withstand seismic shocks and still retain its integrity. Durability is important because in the event of a break or crack, liquid waste can be easily absorbed into the ground and may contaminate the ground water.
  • Heavy Weight - The heavy weight of concrete is also an ideal characteristic. One of the problems with lightweight containers is being prone to floating. During heavy rain, soil can soften and water infiltrate the ground. The hollowed space inside the tank makes it buoyant, which often leads to floating. The buoyancy of the container can push it to the surface of the ground which will require a costly re-installation.
  • On-Site Construction - A concrete tank can be constructed on site, which means it can be customized to suit household requirements. A larger household may want to have a larger container so it does not fill up as quickly and will not require the services of a sanitation company so often, while a smaller household may want to have a smaller size tank installed to reduce construction costs.
  • Legal Issues - A good reason to use concrete is because some states simply do not allow any other material to be used for the construction of a proper septic system.

A septic tank is a vital sanitary infrastructure in places that are not equipped with sewer lines. It is an important temporary storage compartment for waste material. Since sanitary waste is a biological hazard, it important that such storage units are durable in order to prevent environmental pollution. Concrete is the one material that seems to meet all of the durability, environmental and legal requirements which is the best reason to choose concrete for a septic tank!
