Why The Great Smoky Mountains National Park Is So Popular

April 13, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 146

So what is the most popular national park in the United States? Most people guess the Grand Canyon or Yellowstone, but they would be wrong. The Great Smokey Mountains National Park wins the award for being the most popular in the United States. And sitting at one of the three entrances to this gorgeous national park is the small town of Gatlinburg -- which may be small in population, but it is absolutely huge when it comes to what it has to offer the more than 11 million visitors that come to enjoy its unique blend of Americana and fun.

In some ways, Gatlinburg resembles a beach town -- just without the ocean. Its streets are lined with restaurants and cute shops selling a variety of t-shirts, souvenirs and local Appalachian arts and crafts. The Gatlinburg area also has a ton of fun activities for children, including go-cart tracks and miniature golf courses.

In addition, Gatlinburg is home to a variety of popular attractions, including Ripley's Aquarium in the Smokies. Guests to this huge facility can walk through a long, clear underwater tunnel that cuts through a shark exhibit, where large sharks swim over and beside them. Ripley's Aquarium also features an interesting penguin exhibit. This venue was recently rated as the number one aquarium in the United States by the Tripadvisor website.

Ober Gatlinburg is another popular attraction. In the winter, Ober Gatlinburg is a ski facility, but during other times of the year, it doubles as a fun amusement park. Among the many different ride choices available at Ober Gatlinburg is an alpine slide that winds down the mountainside for about 1,800 feet and is even suitable for young kids. This venue also boasts an aerial tramway that takes guests past beautiful views of the Smoky Mountains. Ober Gatlinburg also has a wildlife encounter where guests who haven't spotted a bear in the Smokies can see one up close at this facility.

In addition to all of the attractions, Gatlinburg is also home to a number of musical and comedy acts and dinner shows suitable for all ages to enjoy. Speaking of musical acts, not too far away from Gatlinburg is musical entertainer Dolly Parton's Dollywood, which is an amusement park located in nearby Pigeon Forge.

Travelers to Gatlinburg can choose from a variety of different types of accommodations in and around Gatlinburg, including cabins, hotels and bed and breakfasts. Where a person stays will depend on their personal preferences. For instance, visitors who enjoy being in the middle of the action will typically be happier staying in a Gatlinburg hotel in the center of Gatlinburg, while nature lovers will more than likely prefer a remote mountain cabin.

Of course, anyone visiting Gatlinburg must visit the majestic beauty of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Because Gatlinburg sits right outside the park, it is the perfect place for visitors to stay while exploring this 800-square-mile national park, which is teeming with wildlife, including bears, deer and wild turkey.

Visitors to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park can hike more than 800 miles of hiking trails; many of which lead to gorgeous waterfalls. For less-active visitors, the park's 11-mile Cades Cove loop is a popular drive that meanders through a beautiful valley. It can take between two to four hours to complete this drive, depending on traffic and whether or not guests stop at various pullouts to enjoy hikes or if wildlife sightings cause sudden traffic jams.

Gatlinburg is an interesting blend of man-made fun and nature-made beauty. It is a gorgeous place to visit any time of the year. In the spring, the mountains are filled with wild flowers and the crowds are still light. In the summer, wild animals can be commonly sighted in the national park and the town is at its craziest. In the fall, the mountains are ablaze with the colors of fall; while the winter is popular with snow lovers.
