Infant Jesus of Prague during the Communist Regime

October 15, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 154

Today, Prague boasts of being the third most travelled city in all of Europe. The gothic and baroque architecture holds tourists in awe. It offers the charm of the old world along with the best of modern conveniences and luxuries. No other city has achieved such a perfect blend of the past and the present. However, even amidst all this splendour, the scars of a land ravaged by war and a communist regime are very much present in the city if you look close enough.

The statue of Infant Jesus that is revered, adored and worshipped with zeal and zest in Prague today, did not hold such devotion throughout history. In fact, during the Second World War, when Czech Republic was torn apart by tyranny, it was a grim time for the devotees of Infant Prague. While worship to Infant Jesus was thriving and flourishing in Italy, it was virtually non-existent in Prague. Even in the minds of the old people, devotion to Infant Jesus was only a hazy memory. The communist reign was in power, so the young people were not even exposed the Infant Jesus of Prague. Carmelite friars were forbidden to open the church friars were Infant of Prague resided. Not only that those who dared to reach Infant Jesus of Prague, were at risk of losing their lives. The old prayed for deliverance from tyranny and hardship and hoped to see a better future for their land. Miraculously, the statue of Infant Jesus of Prague remained unharmed during all this time.

The communist reign saw deportation of Carmelite nun out of Prague, but they still continued to spread devotion of Infant Jesus, outside of Prague. Those who remained in Prague, secretly painted pictures of Infant Jesus and secreted them to other convents in Europe.

The Velvet Revolution and the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, was the symbol for the fall of the communist regime. The people of the Czech Republic now had the freedom of worship. The deported Carmelite nuns returned to Prague and were handed over the custody of the Church of Our Lady Victorious by the new Archbishop. The devotion of the Infant Jesus of Prague was now fully restored in Prague.

So it is not only about luxuries hotels in Prague and beautiful ancient facades. When you visit Prague, you will see that it is very much more than that. It is a city that has survived hardship, tyranny and emerged stronger from its suffering.
