The Consequences of Drunk Driving

June 01, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 181

Once individuals learn the facts about drunk driving, they may eventually sober up to the staggering statistics on injuries, deaths and criminal repercussions. The article is meant to enlighten readers about the costs of driving while intoxicated:

The Number of Deaths -According to the Centers of Disease Control (CDC), there were over ten thousand alcohol related accidents in 2009. Out of that number, 33% involved deaths.

DUI Arrests - In most state laws, the blood alcohol count that will warrant an arrest will be 0.08% for first time offenders who are adults. The proof is evidenced in chemical tests that include either urine, blood, or breath test. Other official intoxication evaluations include standardized field sobriety tests.

Underage Drinking - is seen as an epidemic. Again, according to the CDC, at least 11% of children between ages twelve and twenty consume alcohol, even though it is illegal. The age limit for drinking in America begins at twenty one years old.

According to each state's penal codes, and the Department of Motor Vehicles, driving while intoxicated, or under the influence of drugs can come with harsh penalties both in and out of court. These may include:

·Increased premiums for car insurance

·Probation, either formal or informal

·Enrollment in DUI school

·Jail time for misdemeanor sentencing

·Felony convictions for vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated

·Driver's license suspension or cancellation (temporary or permanent)

·Enforcing interlock ignition devices on the cars of DUI offenders

The bottom line: drunk driving can cost individuals their freedom and the guilt of injuring or causing death to another innocent person.

Popular institutions such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD),try to promote these statistics, and also provide practical solutions for those who choose to drink outside their home. As an example, those who party with alcohol are recommended to assign a designated driver, before consuming alcohol. Another suggested option includes calling a cab for the ride home.

This single action prevents serious costs to life, freedom and finances. According to MADD data, the organization assisted victims of drunk driving every nine minutes in the year 2010. Other popular anti-drinking organizations include Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD), or Remove Intoxicated Motorists (RID).

First time DUI offenders are usually given chances to make the situation right, as most courts will order educational classes to help defendants learn about these statistics. For repeat offenders, the laws aren't as lenient, and they're usually served with sentencing enhancements. DUI with a prior will also incur more expenses for hiring DUI lawyers.
