Eating While Driving Proves to Be More Dangerous Than Drunk Driving

June 07, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 168

There could be a number of reasons why most people encounter relative dangers of impaired driving, normally those vehicular accidents. Some of the most common impairments are drowsiness, losing sight of the goal, texting or talking on a cell phone and being influenced under alcohol or drugs.

But a study conducted in Great Britain shows that dangers caused by these impairments could just be at least dangerous compared to this newly discovered cause of distraction. The funny thing here is that this distraction is something we commonly do every day, more like a basic need for man.

A study done by the University of Leeds, entitled "Two Hands Better than One," shows that eating food while driving could be more dangerous than texting or being drunk while driving. This might slow reaction time, as it leaves only one hand for the wheel.

Researchers found that, based on observation of test subjects that operate driving simulators, eating slowed down response times by 44 percent. They measured reaction time while the drivers deal with virtual vehicles.

On the contrary, drinking non-alcoholic beverage from a can or a bottle decreases reaction time by 22 percent while texting by 37 percent.

And that one big prohibition in driving that almost everyone agrees to be such a no-no seems to have the least decrease in reaction time. Drivers who were under the influence of alcohol (reaching only until the US "legal limit" of blood alcohol content which is 0.08 percent) were asked to navigate the simulators and had a drop off in reaction time by only 12.5 percent.

Since the beginning of fast-food drive-thrus, munching down while behind the wheel has become a famous pastime for drivers. While this may seem common and safe as it is one of our basic needs, this could be a dangerous distraction, especially when the driver is eating something that requires both hands like large sandwiches, or sloppy foods like soups, salads or anything that requires them to look down frequently. Drivers may become too busy with their food that they fail to notice traffic lights, crossing pedestrians or sudden curve in the road.

A list of the most dangerous foods to eat while behind the wheel was compiled by The New York Daily. The list includes tacos, hot wings, chocolate, ribs, fried chicken, jelly doughnuts, chili dogs and burgers. Too hot foods are also discouraged because of the possibility that they might fall directly onto your lap and in pain, may cause you to do some maneuver that could be risky for everybody in the car.

Eating while driving could cause up to 80 percent of all the vehicular accidents. So, if possible, avoid eating anything while driving.
