Wooden Blocks - 10 Great Activities To Beat Your Kids' Summertime Boredom Using Wooden Blocks

May 30, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 246

School will be out soon and kids love it. They look forward to days in the sun and playing for hours. But sooner or later summer brings a rainy day or a day too hot to go outside and everyone is stuck inside. Some days the kids are just plain bored, ever hear "Mom, there's nothing to do." Well on those days here's some suggestions using a good old-fashioned set of wooden blocks to chase those summer boredom blues away.

1-Super hot day outside? Cool down by building an igloo out of wooden blocks. Smaller length blocks are the ones that will work best for this project. This may be a real fun challenge for an elementary age child. Make up a story, add some Eskimos, polar bears or penguins to create a fun, cool scene. What other round structures can you build? Maybe a silo for a farm or the Leaning Tower Of Pisa?

2-Read a story with your child, then have them build the setting to that story with their wooden blocks. Imagine Hogwarts castle, Rapunzel's Tower, or the places in Neverland. Encourage them to incorporate other toys or household objects. Make a flag from a toothpick and paper or fabric. Use a dab of clay to connect the flag to the block building. Get out the action figures or toy animals. This could grow into a full day of imaginative play.

3-Challenge your children to build the biggest tower from wooden blocks. Have them predict how tall it will be, when it will fall, which direction it will fall. Have a prize for the winner tower is tallest, or whose predictions are closest.

4-Make a maze of toy blocks. Put a ping-pong ball in the maze and have the kids race through the maze by blowing the ball with a straw. Make two copies of the maze and have them race each other side by side through their "amazing" maze of wooden blocks.

5-Have one child build a structure, have a 2nd child see how many blocks they can remove from the block structure before it falls. Then let the 2nd child build another building, and the 1st child removes the blocks.

6-Make a colony that would be on the moon, or under the sea from building blocks. What kinds of buildings would you need on the moon? If you lived there, what kind of stores would be necessary-a store for oxygen?, a store for space suits? What kinds of vehicles would you need if you lived under the sea? Build them. What would your school be like at the bottom of the ocean? This type of activity can occupy days and fill up your living room. If it is good weather let them build it outside.

7-Try to build a spiral staircase. This is not as easy as you would think. What building blocks do you need to support the stairs as they wind upward? Do you use the same size of blocks in your stairs or do you have to use consecutively smaller ones? Try it and see. Can you make it go around 360 degrees?

8-See how tall your child can build a wooden block tower with only their non-dominant hand. How many blocks difference is there when they build with their dominant hand? Can you stack blocks using no hands? How would you do that? With your elbows, or maybe your toes?

9-Have the child balance a wood block on their head. See how far they can go, or what activities they can do without letting the block fall. Can they jump, skip, hop, run or crawl? How many blocks can they balance at one time on their head?

10-Make up a new game to play using blocks. Could you invent block bowling? Block checkers? Block hopscotch? What are the rules of your new game? What are blocks used for in your game? What is the object of the game? How do you win?

Wooden building blocks for children come with no specific set of instructions. They are a toy that promotes open-ended creative play. They are durable and can be played with differently each time the kids get them out. They require no batteries and who knows they might even be learning something while they spend hours of fun creating amazing things. So next time you hear "Mom I'm bored, there's nothing to do!", get out the set of wooden blocks and let the fun begin.
