Safety Measures To Observe When Using An Excavator

April 17, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 203

An excavator is heavy construction equipment that is used by constructors to dig trenches, demolish unwanted structures, landscaping, among others. There are two types of excavators, classified according to how they are operated; steel cable operated and the hydraulically operated excavator

Excavators are commonly used by constructors to ease the work at any construction site. Constructors are usually exposed to serious risks at work. It is therefore advisable to adhere to the following safety measures at work, especially when using excavators.

The first and most important safety precaution when operating an excavator is the use of the appropriate personal safety gear and protective wear. This is mandatory to not only the worker operating the machine, but also to their colleagues Safety gear and protective wear includes boots, safety vests, hard hats, protective glasses earmuffs and among others.

It is also important to note that the personnel operating the excavator must be adequately trained on its proper operation and use. The operator must also be licensed and certified by the relevant authorities.

It is also important to ensure that the excavator used is checked and certified by an authorized inspector. It should also be repaired and maintained regularly depending on the work schedule to ensure maximum safety and efficiency. Failure to do this puts both the operator and other workers on the work site at risk.

There should also be a number of warning posters and signs to alert the traffic that an excavator is in use at the site to avoid any accidents. The signs should be very visible both during the day and also at night. The signs are also essential as they also alert the workers on safety procedures to be observed while working.

The working area is normally referred to as a danger zone. You should make sure that no worker other than the operator is within the danger zone to avoid accidents. This can be done by use of protective tape around the area, signs and alarms that warn the workers to stay at a safe distance.

You should also see to it that you observe and follow the manufacturer's instructions and specifications on how to use the excavator. This includes specifications such as the right attachments to be used, the lifting capacity, as well as the operating procedure, among others. There should also be some safety and rescues measures in place, just in case of any accidents that may occur at work. These safety measures must be adhered to at all times.
