Different Types And Uses Of Excavators

April 25, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 104

Excavators, also commonly referred to as backhoes or diggers are engineering vehicles used for digging and moving materials at construction sites.

The general design of an excavator includes a host of features; a cab, a long and strong boom arm that are both mounted on a mobile engineering vehicle on wheels or a set of tracks. The boom is the elbow of the system and holds the stick connected to the bucket. The bucket is normally an attachment and can be replaced by another one of a different specification depending on the type of work to be done.

The cab that houses the controls of the excavator and the operator can rotate in a full circle hence the alias 360 degree digger. The normal digging operation is facilitated by the use of hydraulics or a pulley system using wires instead of ropes to move the boom and bucket.

The excavator is mainly used in different construction sites for digging and moving of materials. It can however be employed in other different operations for example in mining sites where it is used for digging and lifting of materials. Other common uses include demolition of condemned buildings, river and lakeside dredging among others.

There are many different types of excavators that can be found in many construction sites today. Excavators are mainly classified depending on their arm force, digging depths, maximum height, power rating and the dumping height. They mainly range in different sizes and specifications. The small types are mainly referred to as compact or mini excavators and are used for small jobs for example indoor operations. Many of the mini excavators come equipped with a bulldozer blade that is fitted at the front.

The smallest of the excavators can fit through doorways and are hence used for indoor jobs. The compact excavators can further be categorized into two types namely, the zero tail swing and the tail swing excavators. The tail swing type usually has a rear counterweight that serves the purpose of stabilizing the machine during digging.

These were the conventional type of excavators but had a disadvantage during maneuvering since the counter weight extended well over the tracks. The 1990s brought about the introduction of the zero tail swing excavators whose main feature is that the counterweight doesn't move beyond the tracks width hence better maneuverability.

Previous models of excavators usually had buckets as the only attachments at the end of their arms. This is in contrast to modern types which come with numerous attachments including grapples, augers and breakers among others. There are also different bucket types for example general purpose, sorting and tilt buckets. All these attachments can easily be fitted depending on the work to be done.
