Avoiding Timeshare Disasters

February 13, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 204

The Problem Of Timeshare Fees

The person or company selling you your timeshare more than likely isn't going to tell you just how much money you'll be spending on maintenance fees. In order to put together a proper estimate, you'll have to find out just what luxuries the company selling the timeshare supplies. This will in no way give you a definite number - you could be off by hundred or even thousands of dollars, especially with other factors like location in the mix. To avoid being caught off guard, simply come out and ask your seller about maintenance costs. You wouldn't want to find out before you'd even had your vacation that you'd purchased a property you couldn't really afford.

Is A Timeshare Right For You?

Timeshare properties aren't always the best option for people, especially when they get pulled into scams. Sure, the occasional gem will reveal itself, if you spend enough time searching the industry, or check eBay every fifteen minutes - but those are usually scams as well, so you'd probably be better off avoiding those too. Not to mention that even if you do get a timeshare, you probably won't be in it often enough to gain the points for the cool perks to make your vacation actually worth it. And it must be said that the maintenance fees (and all the other fees you'll be saddled with), are not cheap at all. That being said, it may be a better option for you to join a resort club.

Age-Old Timeshare Scams

A scam that timeshare con artists frequently engage in is to send a notice that you or your spouse has won a free holiday, during whatever time of year you choose. However, a fee is required, and you must make your decision quickly. But as soon as you send in your money with the fee, unfortunately, the company will report that the promotional giveaway is over. Another even more infuriating tactic is for a seller to try to get you to buy their timeshare in exchange for the one you already have. But all that ends up happening is you make your purchase and end up with two timeshares, a devious trick indeed, as you now have to pay the maintenance fees for both.

Don't Be Caught Off Guard

When it comes to avoiding timeshare scams, the best thing you can do is avoid companies that require a fee be paid before they have actually gotten any results for you. Research the company, and check with the local business bureau to see if they're legitimate. Their prices may sound great, but it could all just be a trick to lure you in. Ideally, you should look for fair prices, not those that sound like a dream come true. More often than not, it'll end up just being a nightmare.
