Tennis Court Resurfacers: Acrylic Resurfacer Vs Asphalt-Based Emulsions

April 19, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 80

Throughout time, all industries evolve and make changes as needed. This is vital to continued improvement and quality. In the tennis court surfacing industry there is still debate on when and why to use acrylic resurfacer (AR) or asphalt emulsions (AE). In a nutshell, acrylic resurfacer is superior in every way and is newer technology when it comes to sport surfacing systems. Here are some comparative facts on each:

  • Acrylic Resurfacer can suspend 15 to 16 lbs of sand, per gallon. A resurfacers' main job is to fill voids in pavement and to achieve a texture on existing smooth surfaces. This contributes to the overall consistency of the final playing surface and the longevity of the colored surfaces.
  • Asphalt Emulsions can only suspend 5 to 6 lbs of sand, per gallon. It would take 3 coats of an AE to provide the same filling capacity as Acrylic Resurfacer.
  • Asphalt emulsions contain fillers that absorb moisture, which can cause swelling and weakness in the coating layer. This can lead to early failure and delamination, especially during times of freezing. If used over a polished, existing acrylic surface, the asphalt layers have a greater tendency to absorb increased amounts of moisture that move through the coats at a slower rate.
  • It is recommended that asphalt emulsions are rolled after application to achieve density.
  • Acrylic Resurfacers do not require rolling
  • Both Asphalt and Acrylic Resurfacers require a minimum asphalt curing period of 14 days (under prime curing conditions), prior to application. However, 30 days are recommended to ensure full curing, especially during times of the year when curing conditions are not ideal.
  • Asphalt Emulsions need to cure for 24 hours prior to application of acrylic color coatings.
  • Acrylic Resurfacer can be coated with acrylic color when dry.
  • Asphalt Emulsions are temperature sensitive and become soft under high heat conditions. This can result in acrylic coating tears on hot days. AE can also become brittle under cold periods, whereas Acrylics are very stable under a variety of temperature and weather conditions.

The initial cost savings of using asphalt-based emulsions as a tennis court resurfacer are attractive, but after weighing the long-term options, many see the value and savings of staying with 100% acrylic coatings throughout all layers. No court owner or contractor wants to go through the nightmare of dealing with sheets of delaminating coatings and the cost of having to remove the entire coating system back down to the pavement.
