How to Eliminate Fear at the Net

April 14, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 123

I just walked off the courts after 5 hours and 30 minutes of play. No, I am not addicted to tennis, I just love the game. Here is what usually happens when I am there. First, I play a few sets of doubles with my usual Saturday group of guys and then I have a few players come by that want me to help them with some part of their game. Since I can't say no, I keep playing until there is no one left to play with. One of the things that is an issue time and again is fear at the net.

After watching a few doubles matches, I wanted to emphasize the importance of net play once again. I can't tell you how frustrating it is on the side lines to watch a player get to a short ball that landed ten feet from the net and then attempt to retreat to the baseline. I say attempt to retreat, because the majority of the time they never complete the journey and they also lose the point. If you are afraid to play in the front court you are ignoring a major weapon in your arsenal and need to eliminate fear at the net.

There are two kinds of fear that I see in players' faces. For a lot of the female players it is a fear of the ball. Yes, that little round fuzzy thing that we are knocking around the court. Not the kind of fear that the mere sight of the ball causes them to flee in terror, but the fear of being hit with it. Ladies, I am almost certain that each of you have had any number of things happen to you that are more painful than being hit by a tennis ball. The other applies equally to both sexes, the fear of success. The player comes to the net and they mangle the shot. They regroup and come to the net again and get passed by a beautiful shot up the middle.

This is not the time to retreat to the baseline but time to eliminate fear at the net. It may take four, five or six approaches before you start to see the pressure of you being at the net pay big dividends. The trick is choosing when to come forward. If your opponents send you an invitation to come to the net, you have no choice but to accept. If you hit a shot that has your opponents in a defensive position, come to the net. Do not hit the softest ball you can short in the middle of the court and come in behind it. You are not the only player on the court feeling the pressure of playing a match.

Control your fear at the net by developing a better game. The more you play up the greater your opportunity for success and success breeds confidence. If you are confident you can eliminate your fear. When you are hitting winning volleys players hit away from you, so you have no fear of being hit. Now that both causes of fear have been effectively removed, have fun and take advantage of the net.

These are just a few of the suggestions that will help to eliminate fear at the net and help each player improve their game. Next, discover the best free tennis tips at
