Bizarre Tennis Courts Around the World

June 22, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 172

One of the greatest things about tennis is that it can be played almost anywhere. From having a rally over your garden gate to hitting a ball against a wall, people are forever trying to come up with new and ingenious places to play tennis. Forget the pristine courts of Wimbledon though as here are some of the most bizarre tennis courts around the world.

Floating Court in Doha Bay, Qatar

It's often been said that Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal can walk on water and in Qatar, they did just that! This amazing floating tennis court in the water of Doha Bay was constructed in 2011 for an exhibition match between two of the all-time greats. With no ball boys (or buoys), it's unclear what the score was or even who won, but it was certainly something neither player had experienced before.

Highest Court in the World, Dubai

This court is certainly not for acrophobics! The highest tennis court in the world can be found on top of the Burj al-Arab in Dubai - the fourth tallest hotel in the world. Doubling up as a helipad when it's not being used for tennis, the court stands near the top of the hotel that is 1,053 feet off the ground. Andre Agassi and Roger Federer tested out their skills on this vertigo-inducing court, probably losing a few balls in the process.

Clay/Grass Court in Mallorca

In the most amazing battle of the surfaces, Federer and Nadal slugged it out in 2007 on a special half clay/half grass court in Mallorca. At the time Federer had won 48 consecutive matches on grass, while Nadal was unbeaten in 72 matches on clay so this was the ultimate test. Players had to change their footwear at each changeover to play on each different surface. In this most challenging of matches, Nadal came out on top after winning a tie-break in the third set to see off his rival.

Wings of a Plane

As the number one player in the world, Novak Djokovic is understandably flying high at the moment, but the Serb went one step further when he climbed on top of a bi-plane to have a game mid-flight on its wings. Flying at 150mph and attached to one of its wings, Djokovic defied the laws of physics by managing to have an incredible rally in this tennis racket commercial.

Desert Island in Doha

Many miles away from the often wet and rainy conditions in SW19, Ana Ivanovic and Elena Dementieva played a match in 2008 in an altogether different climate - a desert island in Doha. A custom court was built on Palm Island in the middle of Doha Bay, which was absolutely deserted so apart from a few cameras; there was nobody there to see them play. With the incredible Doha skyline in the distance, this was a unique experience for both players as they played this extraordinary match surrounded by sand.
